Wedgewood's classic - if brief - analysis of Richelieu's reign. Not the eminence grise of the 'Three Musketeers' but a driven man - determined to serve France well and to introduce a modern administrative system to a nation still trapped in a medieval structure. No doubt self-seeking, arguable God-fearing, and probably a patriot. A complex character who needs a much lengthier analysis than is provided here. Nevertheless, a classic little piece of history.
