9 of 10 people found the following review helpful By A. Norman on 4 Mar. 2009
I am not going to comment on the quality of the music, as all that needs to be said is that it is Wagner.
All of the recordings are at least of an acceptable standard. Many of the recordings are very good. The recording of the Ring has powerful sopranos and robust contraltos and basses. The lyrical sopranos in the earlier operas are sublime and charming. Most of the recordings are Bayreuth Festival recordings, the 'Meistersinger' recording is conducted by Karajan and the 'Tristan und Isolde' recording is from Covent Garden, conducted by Furtwangler. Unfortunatly, the recording of 'Der Fliegende Hollander' is awful. The quality of the performance is okay, but the sound quality makes A.M. Radio sound like Dolby Digital, resulting in hissing, faint parts of the orchestra and peaking in many places. I would recommend buying another one (such as the Levine Met. recording). 'Parsifal' is the definitive Beyreuth 1951 revival recording, but this does mean that it includes various unwanted noises, especially coughing, which has an annoying habit of occuring just in the quiet and sublime parts. The singing can't be faulted though. The lead tenor in 'Tannhauser' also has a very reedy voice, in my opinion. I have no complaints against the performances of the other recordings. The recording of 'Rienzi' is abridged, however this doesn't matter as it is not a particularly well-known or Wagnerian opera anyway. Also, these are very quiet recordings. I am not commenting on the performances (they are as loud as Wagner should be), but you will have to adjust your volume controls from what you normally have them as. There are also no little booklets which you get when you buy C.D.

Additional information 15 Aug. 2008

Yes, it's a shame that so many Amazon listings lack basic correct information like the number of discs, etc.

Using the "asin", I tracked down this link:

[...]

This seems to clearly confirm that there are 43 discs. There is also good information on the various artists involved, such that you can work out which performances are included.

* Der Fliegende Holländer (Hotter, Hann, Willer, Orchester der Bayerischen Staatsoper, Krauss / 1944)
* Tannhäuser (Seider, Schech, Paul, Bäumer, Klarwein, Orchester der Bayerischen Staatsoper, Heger / 1951)
* Lohengrin (Steber, Varnay, Windgassen, Uhde, Greindl, Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele, Keilberth / 1953)
* Das Rheingold (Wegner, Mosuraltis, Yang, Smith, Weinschenk, Badische Staatskapelle, Neuhold / 1993-1995)
* Die Walküre (Cook, Olsen, Wegner, Pohl, Nikolova, Badische Staatskapelle, Neuhold / 1994, 1995)
* Rienzi (Treptow, Eipperle, Prybit, Schlüter, RSO Hessen, Zillig / 1950)
* Parsifal (London, Weber, Windgassen, Uhde, Mödl, Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele, Knappertsbusch / 1951)
* Die Feen (Korhonen, Patchell, Sonntag, Kriscak, Sirkiä, Teatro Comunale di Cagliari Orchestra,Ötvös / 1998)
* Götterdämmerung (Cook, Brinkmann, Bryjak, Tervo, Ronge, Pohl, Badische Staatskapelle, Neuhold / 1995)
* Meistersinger (Edelmann, Hopf, Schwarzkopf, Kunz, Unger, Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele, Karajan / 1951)
* Siegfried (Neumann, Weinschenk, Wegner, Bryjak, Yang, Badische Staatskapelle, Neuhold / 1994, 1995)
* Das Liebesverbot (Walter, Zadek, Dermota, Friedrich, Steffek, Großes Wiener Rundfunkorchester, Heger / 1963)
* Tristan & Isolde (Suthaus, Flagstad, Greindl, Fischer-Dieskau, Thebom, Philharmonia Orchestra, Furtwängler / 1952)

I hope this is helpful. I am seriously considering the purchase, particularly for some of the more obscure operas. I note, though, that this included Ring may be had for an even cheaper per disc price.

Amazon, Please Clarify Product Info! 28 May 2008
By J. Alexander - Published on Amazon.com
As far as stars are concerned I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt. Why doubt? Because I'm afraid to order when product description says 1 disc, editorial says 4 discs, but the picture of the box itself says 43 discs. If I pay these kind of prices for Wagner's complete operas on 43 discs that's an outstanding deal! It would be nice if someone who knows something about the performances etc. would drop a note here. Unfortunately I'll not be able to leave a follow-up.
