Product Description

Sony Classical celebrates 100 years of Richard Tucker with the release of two limited edition original album releases, an Opera Recital Album Collection of 10 CDs including seven “first time on CD releases” by Sony Classical and a Song and Cantorial Album Collection of 14 CDs, also including seven “first time on CD releases”. In the course of his career, which began on 25 January 1945 with Enzo in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda and ended on 3 December 1974 with Canio in Pagliacci, American Tenor Richard Tucker appeared in 344 performances at the old Met, 160 in the new house and 230 on tour. The only other tenors to have had longer careers were his predecessor Giovanni Martinelli and, later, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. In an affectionate foreword that he contributed to James Drake’s biography of the greatest American tenor, Pavarotti asked: “What made Richard Tucker such a phenomenon? First and foremost were his voice and technique. His voice was not only beautiful – shimmering, silvery, and very powerful – but also incredibly enduring. For thirty years his voice remained youthful and vibrant, and his technique as close to perfect as one can get.” The consistency with which he sang over a period of more than three decades is little short of miraculous, a point underscored by the recordings assembled here, which date from 1947 to 1967.

I well remember Saturday Met broadcasts with Tucker, a great tenor especially in his earlier days (true of all of us). This set (soon to be released in the US, by the way) is a collection of his recital LPs reproducing the jackets which, for those of us who owned the originals, is good nostalgia even if the small print can be a bit hard to read but not bad. The only downside of an "original jacket" release is that no additional tracks are added. A couple of these CDs have playing times of 33 min or less. Ah, well, I still highly recommend this release of a great tenor before it disappears.

I have these albums on vinyl and haven't played them in over 20 years, I was delighted when this box-set was offered,
Thank-you Amazon and Sony for bringing this music back into publication.
I hand the unique privilege of meeting Richard Tucker twice--one in 1965 after a Pittsburgh performance, and again 1969.
He was a fine a gentleman as he was an artist.
God surely blest him with one of the greatest voices of all time,

Stunning -- And A Trip "Down Memory Lane" 26 Oct. 2013
By John G. Gleeson Sr. - Published on
    Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Richard Tucker (Born Rubin Ticker) was born in a Brooklyn tenement in 1913, so this year is the centennial of that event. His life was wonderfully captured in a biography by James A. Drake, which, though out of print, is stilll available here from Amazon sellers. I saw him perform several times, with Rigoletto, Boheme, Forza and Trovatore being the ones I best remember. He was a gifted singer, but not so gifted as an actor, yet that clarion voice with its immense, ringing top made that acting deficiency irrelevant.

These discs were all available on vinyl back in the day, and I owned every one. To have them back in re-mastered form on CD is fabulous. Fortunately, some of his complete recordings were and are on CD, with his Forza, with Price and Merrill being still the best recorded version of that opera, so I was not completely deprived. But here we have arias from the wealth of opera roles (35, I think) that were not recorded as entire operas.

The thing that strikes me now on rehearing is how youthful Tucker's voice remained over his career. Yes, the voice aquired more depth and richness, but the silvery sheen that made him identifiable on the first note never was lost. Artists like Tucker are rare and we are fortunate to have this extended opportunity to experience his work over many years and many roles.

Disc quality is quite good. There is a companion set that features his Cantorial work (Tucker was a deeply religious Jew and first sang as a Cantor) which I am saving my pennies to get. I remember the works fron the vinyl editions, and while I am not Jewish and thus unfamiliar with cantorial singing as a faith experience, as a musical event, they were splendid. That set also includes Italian songs and some operetta stuff that was well executed on vinyl.

But here, gentle reader, we have him in splendid voice. Many of you, I suspect, are too young to have seen him perform, but if you love opera, please do not pass on this set.

Sir Rudolf Bing, past manager of the Met, once said, "Caruso, Caruso, that's all you hear -- I have an idea that we're going to be proud someday to be able to tell people that we have heard Richard Tucker."

    I did, and I am!

As great a tenor as any 11 Oct. 2013

I cannot believe how this set of arias by Tucker has affected me. Here is some truly magnificent singing. How some, in his later years, could boo him is beyond my belief. I had the good fortune to hear him at the Met sometime in the mid 60s--if memory serves, I believe it was a performance of UN BALLO with Price-- and there were some in the audience who booed him while others uttered load bravos. These recordings, in my opinion, are priceless. They are giving me immense pleasure and it is as though Sony has dropped something from heaven into my lap. I am amazed by his control, the rock solid nature of every note, and that ringing quality that the great old tenors had. Don't let this one get away from you.

    excellent collection 30 Sept. 2013
By Col William Russell (ret) - Published on
    Format: Audio CD
Like another reviewer, I also have (or had) these releases. Some of them got played to death. On one hand, it's nice to have these albums complete and with the original packaging (the print is small but quite clear). CD releases have included many of these and some of these releases are reissues with a couple new recordings but for the price, the short playing times and duplications are worth it. Especially in his younger years, Tucker's voice was a glory of the Met and hasn't been equalled - not even by Domingo. The sound is excellent and even the mono releases should sound good to digital ears.

Sony has a bad habit of withdrawing releases so grab this one now while you can.

A Very Nice Richard Tucker Collection 27 Jan. 2014
By Mark E. Stenroos - Published on
    Format: Audio CD
Tenor Richard Tucker recorded for both Columbia and RCA - his solo recordings were made for Columbia while I'd guess that most of his complete opera recordings were made for RCA. This set draws exclusively on Tucker's Columbia catalog, and it's very representative of his work over the years. I've always felt that Columbia recorded his voice with the mic placed too closely. His voice has more bloom in his RCA recordings and significantly more bloom in various live recordings.

For as much as he sang at The Met and for as much as he was a stalwart of operatic tenors, Tucker's voice still seems to be an acquired taste for many people. There's a lot of reasons for that, not all of them informed or necessarily good (an acquaintance of mine once remarked that Tucker's cantorial singing was too operatic while his operatic singing was too cantorial). My first encounter with Tucker's voice was when I borrowed his LP of French arias (included as a CD in this set) from my local library back in my high school days. I didn't like the voice at all! It sounded nasal or throaty to me. Not having a clue as to what a great voice was, I went with my youthful gut reaction.

As I went on to study voice myself, my appreciation for Tucker grew by leaps and bounds. It was easier to appreciate Tucker after becoming acquainted with Martinelli, whose vocal delivery was a lot like Tucker's. It's also easier to appreciate Tucker's straight-forward delivery of music and text once you learn how hard it is to sing much of the repertoire with any kind of authority and artistry.

If you love Richard Tucker, then you'll love this set. If you're on the fence, you might want to give this set a try. If you're not a fan, this set probably won't change your mind.

Note: as these CDs faithfully reproduce the content of LPs, most of them run for only 30-40 minutes. That's OK, because the price-per-CD in this set is more than reasonable. Some of this material has already been released on CD, like the Verdi Arias and duets (with Eileen Farrell) that were coupled as a single CD in Sony's Masterworks Heritage series. I have to give props to Sony for their move to CD packaging that restores the look of original LPs, from the record sleeves down to the CD label looking like an LP. This style was started by DG with their "Originals' series, and I'm happy to see that others have jumped on the bandwagon.
