From Amazon.co.uk

As Richard Thompson explains in his typically droll annotation, 1000 Years of Popular Music came about after Playboy asked various musicians to rank their top 10 songs of the millennium. While most dipped no farther back than a few decades--a century at most--Thompson's musical memory rose to the challenge. The result is this concert set's encapsulation of 22 songs that trace a musical progression from the Middle Ages through Britney Spears, with Judith Owen and Debra Dobkin providing spare instrumental and rich vocal support. Released as a concert DVD with two audio CDs, the selection is irrepressibly idiosyncratic, from rounds, madrigals, and British balladry that recall Thompson's early days in Fairport Convention through the music-hall singalong of "I Live in Trafalgar Square" to dips into the songbooks of the Kinks ("See My Friends"), Squeeze ("Tempted"), and Bowling for Soup ("1985"). Among the highlights are the soulful tenderness of the 17th century's "Bonnie St. Johnstone," a haunting "Shenandoah," a samba arrangement of Cole Porter's "Night and Day," and a deliriously rocking rendition of the Easybeats' "Friday on My Mind."--Don McLeese

What a revelation this is. This pack should be on the National Syllabus - how music has evolved over 1000 years, how everything influences and connects to what will come after - it just takes one great natural musician to pull everything together into a marvellous performance. A Gilbert & Sullivan duet is given a lusty re-working, Thompson singing with startling gumption! Britney's 'Ooops...' is even more inspired, and worth the price of admission alone. Once you've heard this, you'll be playing it over and over, and not just because of the disbelief that RT - yes, HIM - is playing THAT! It really is this good.

This DVD/CDs combination is a hugely entertaining and educational treasure. Unique and beautifully produced. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars richard thompson surveys and plays a 1000 years. 27 Jun 2006

I obtained a copy of the CD some while ago from Richard Thompson,s beesweb site, following superb reviews in all of the music press. Now comes this set,a DVD and double CD, If your not aware of Richard Thompson then you really are missing one of the greatest singer/guitarists Britain has ever produced. This live set features Thompson, with just Judith Owen (vcls/keyboards) and

Debra Dobkin(percussion/vcls). The range of songs will leave you stunned in it's variation from medival music through standards

like Cry Me A River and Shenandoah, through music hall songs such as I Live In Trafalgar Square,to Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado. Then onto rock n roll Drinkin'Wine to the Kinks See My Friends,to

Squeezes Tempted, not to mention Britney Spears Ooops I Did It Again, Yes, folk, rock, pop, jive, opera, madrigals, standards,I could go on and on,but this is without doubt one of the great releases

of the year by one of our greatest talents, and in concert.

It's quite a year for RT fans what with the awesome box set,and now this wonderful release.Do yourself a favour and treat

yourself, you will not be disappointed.FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY...and more.

A thrilling performance. Music of all genres spanning over 800 years delivered by Thompson, versatile vocalist Judith Owen and ace session percussionist Debra Dobkin, from the pulsating start 'A Sumer Is Icumen In, (via English Madrigals, The Mikado, big band jazz,) picking up speed with a great version of The Easy Beats' 'Friday On My Mind', the recording smashes down the walls that we've erected between genres with wit sensitivity and flair.

This is a constantly surprising and fresh package, for example Britney's 'Oops I Did It Again' is transformed into what sounds like a sinister confession by Hannibal Lecter, before being twisted into an enchanting Tudor dance.

The DVD features the set in its entirety with detailed & funny deadpan stories about the songs & their inclusion. The CDs are live tracks not studio recordings and all the better for it. Accompanying notes are clear, concise & beautifully detailed in every way.

This is a beautiful looking and sounding thing, its great fun and dammit its got something important to say about music.
