I am not a person who generally writes reviews, but after listening to Strauss' only Piano Sonata performed by the one and only Great Glenn Gould I had to say this, that this is one of the most neglected Piano Sonatas of all times. You will have to listen to it to know what I am trying to say. Highly recommended!

This CD is a revelation and an essential historical document. Not only is it fabulous music - honestly, the Beethoven inspired piano sonata is magnificent and the playing is full of Gouldish joie de vivire - but the sleeve notes tell us that this was Gould's last ever recording. How sad, yet wonderful that his last recording should be so joyous and memorable.

The other reviewers have said most of what needs to be said. For me, the amazing thing is that Strauss was only 16 going on 17 when he wrote this. Like his violin and first horn concertos he wrote around the same time it is fresh, imaginative and engaging. But the sonata also has some depth that hints at the great things to come. Early Strauss really deserves to be listened to more and not dismissed as "student work". Yes, his adult style does not emerge until Don Juan 6 years later, but this is still a great piano sonata.

Just one reservation. Gould is great, but as with his other recordings, you can hear him singing along. Maybe this will become annoying! Don't know yet.

A curiosity, of course, but played with genuine warmth as well as the consummate skill we expect from Gould. Recommended.

R.Strauss Piano Sonata & other solo piano pieces show Glenn's more Romantic side. He plays each piece splendidly with exquisite tonal shading and rich imagination. Delightful collection of music!
