I disagree with the previous reviewer on the quality of this work. It is certainly true that the action is quite limited but I think Strauss, at this late stage in his career, was pursuing an ideal of beauty which is fully realised in this piece. It is an example of the great works of Strauss's Indian summer, a long outpouring of lyrical beauty. June Anderson relishes the wonderful soprano lines in her role as Daphne and is almost matched by the two fine tenors Roberto Sacca and Scott MacAllister as Leukippos and Apollo respectively.
The staging is fairly simple but effective. The orchestra and conducting is sympathetic and rises well to the beautiful final scene, one of Strauss's greatest achievements.

This Venetian production is pretty much on the money as far as the performance goes
but the piece's almost complete lack of action, coupled with a lumbering use of language make for heavy going.
June Anderson is in fine voice but looks too mature for the virginal heroine
whose almost maniacal devotion to nature sets rolling what little plot there is.
The rest of the cast do not disappoint.
One cannot escape the notion that Strauss is just marking time until the final metamorphosis
which when it comes is as magical as one could wish.
But that the climax of the opera involves such static ecstasy underlines the lack of humanity and warmth throughout.
A cold gem of a piece that perhaps only Strauss completists will devote their time to.
