Live and Smokin is possibly the greatest example of Richard Pryors savage, pioneering comedy. Young, fierce and funny as hell this is genuinely astonishing material.
Years before the cocaine abuse and movie roles tampered with his mettle, this is the full fire of the greatest stand-up comedian of all time. Filmed in a small, hip New York stand-up club in 1971 before a shocked crowd, this is one of modern comedys true defining moments.

Man, the guy who gave this 1 star! you should have bought Richard Pryor Live in Concert, this is pryor at his best
I have the Revolver UK edition which I presume is R2 and has a cheapo documentary called Pryor Knowledge.
The first part of Pryor's set is good. For 1971 he is doing material which may have shocked many then. It's stuff that Andrew Dice Clay was doing 20 years later. It's crude, rude, profane and sometimes surrealist. That part I liked.
The second half is poor when he immitates the hobo and the junkie. The audience don't laugh but in a crazy way it's a kind of interesting routine. Somebody in the documentary says that Pryor was out of it at this gig - probably so and there is another comment that he was very nervous because he was being filmed.
But you can see here the seeds of his later work.
The extras are a little insert that has a small bit from his autobiography Pryor Convictions that has him writing about being diagnosed with MS. It's not a must have.
The documentary has comedians and talking heads telling us about their love of the great man. It's ok, most interesting is a dude who wrote a book about black comedy in America.
At least it doesn't have constant background music, the camera zooming in and out and reinactments of Pryor's life (current tv take note).
Richard Blackwood is in it....whatever happened to him?
Overall I thought this dvd wasn't bad, certainly one for the fans.
Richard Pryor was such a loveable rogue!
Blu ray viewers and the like may find the quality of footage the only shock and should ignore unless they really loved the guy.
Like I said, buy this if you love him, but not if your looking for another wacky clever comedy sketch.
