Richard Cobden - Independent Radical by Nicholas C. Edsall is a biography of the leader of probably the most successful extra-parliamentary pressure group in British history, the Anti-Corn Law League. Although the subject is interesting the wrting style is overly complex and off-putting to the casual reader and therefore lets the book down. Also the fact that it is a biography but not in chronological but thematic order is in my opinion off-putting plus the fact that there is little of the story of the man seperate from his politics (for example it is the first biography I have ever read where the subjects date of birth is not mentioned) leaves you with an impression of the political figure rather than the man. All in all it is a book dealing with an interesting subject let down by style and structure.
