Product Description

Revised and updated third edition of the established standard book on Port. Long the Port guide for The International Wine and Food Society and required reading for the Wine Education Trust diplomas. As the world demand and prices for Port continue to climb, as new Quintas and shippers emerge, updated information from an established authority becomes indispensable. The fascinating history of the region and the trade along with detailed descriptions of the viticulture and winemaking techniques are covered. Special attention has been given to tasting notes and comments in new labels and a thorough updating of the Vintage charts and ageing potential of the great Ports. New information is provided on the changes in ownership, the role of great wine families, world market trends and viticultural and ecological technical advances. Valuable notes on tasting and evaluating Ports, Port with food and "Ports" from other countries are included.

Ben Howkins has written an excellent book that lists and details all aspects of port that one could possibly want to know. Whether one is merely a temporary fan of the drink, or a lifelong follower, this book will provide interesting and relevant information for all.

Howkins has a clear style of writing that makes a nervous reader comfortable. It is clearly written by an expert content to pass on his knowledge. An excellent present for port and wine lovers, replacing the traditional wine gifts with something a little more exceptional, as port is.

After a Douro Cruise I bought this book to supplement information gained on visits to Ferreira in Vila Nova Da Gaia & Sandeman's Quinta Da Seixo near Pinhão in the Douro. It was read withing 30 hours of receiving it - so it's an easy read and contains much very good information. However, while it appears that the preface has been thoroughly updated in this edition and also the tables of vintages in the appendix, there are some instances where the main body of the text is out of date, e.g. "The Douro is not navigable".....!

All in all a good value book which I could recommend to anyone wishing to learn more, fully updated it would be 5 Star.
