When this film was first shown in American cinemas there were shocked gasps at the level of violence on show. Since then this film has only been available as a cut version and in the UK it seems that it has never received a certificate from the BBFC. Now though, this unrated region 1 DVD (UK viewers will need a multi-region player) has all the cut bits restored and it can now be seen in its full form which runs for a little under 94 minutes.

Two years after his father was gunned down, Ricco Aversi (Christopher Mitchum) is released from prison and vows to get even with the man responsible, Don Avito (Arthur Kennedy) who also took Ricco's girlfriend Rosa (Melisa Longo). With the help of new girlfriend Scilla (Barbara Bouchet) Ricco pulls no punches as he and The Don engage in a bloody battle for survival. The Don has his own methods of dealing with people who displease him and it is not a pretty sight. The ending could come as a surprise to many but you will have to see for yourselves.

The gore is explicit, the acting can best be described as mediocre but to compensate there are delightful displays by Barbara Bouchet and Melisa Longo - Miss Bouchet looks to be really enjoying herself as she entertains two of The Don's men in their car. The bonus features are a theatrical trailer and an interview with Christopher Mitchum.

Ricco gets out of prison and goes after the bad guys who'd gunned down his mob affiliated father 2 years previous. However not being 100% sure of the culprits means he has to go about town making enquiries and put himself in some dangerous situations.
On his mission of vengeance he also drinks the odd J&B and wears an inordinate amount of turtle neck sweaters..

Not a bad little euro~crime movie this one. There's pretty much everything you'd want in here, with the exception of maybe some really dangerous car chase stunts and a decent wacka~wacka soundtrack.
The plot's a bit silly but it's lively enough, with a tone that's nice and sleazy, and some ludicrously graphic moments of ultraviolence to help it stand out. Chris Mitchum actually doing a reasonable job, cruising around in his awful, custard coloured Noddy car, looking like he just ransacked John Alderton's roll neck jumper drawer. Proving his tough guy credentials with the kind of threatening kung fu moves you'd expect Rodney from Only Fools and Horses to have in his arsenal!

Arthur Kennedy in a comedy villains 'tashe, is as truculent as ever, in the role of the evil Don Vito. Melting down whoever upsets him into bars of soap. Aided by Victor Israel, making an appearance as a mob nightclub owner, who's establishment offers us viewers both amusing and welcome glimpses of some wild, spasmic 1970s discotheque gyrations.
Bouchet's cleavage is nigh on mesmeric in a couple of scenes, and at one point she does a striptease act over a car bonnet, which is sure to grab most men's attention.

The US dark sky disc is uncut and the sound print comes with an interview with Mitchum, and a trailer as extras

The item is perfect, but:
I bought this movie from another company only in English, but I needed it in English and Spanish, and saw the add from all your music saying English and Spanish.
Sent them a first E-Mail, asking if it was in two languages, and got a YES answer.
Not very happy with it, and thinking it could be the same DVD as I had bought on the other page, I sent them a second E-Mail asking again, and explaining I had the same movie with all the details: distribution, etc. , but only in English.
Their answer was the same again: English and Spanish.
So I bought it, and got what I didnt want: Only English.
I sent it back asking for my money refund including the return shipping costs. I
got the money I had payed, but not the return shipping costs.
If the page would have marked correctly the product description, we would have saved some problems

Dreadful Movie, But 2 Redeeming Reasons To Suffer Through It... 15 April 2010
By 4-Legged Defender - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
And those two reasons are Barbara Bouchet and Malisa Longo. They both look incredible in the 70`s clothing when they are dressed, and even more intoxicating when they aren`t, which is a fair amount of their screen time. Barbara does an irresistable, iconic striptease at one point, worthy of watching for this scene alone, and Malisa looks scrumptiously shagadelic with a great tan and see-through lingerie while seducing the crimelord`s hired gorilla. Otherwise, this flick`s a joke - Chris Mitchum looks just like his dad, but posesses none of his acting ability, and fights like a girl. He`s tedious to watch, and if your leading man`s no good, and has the machismo of Liberace, you`re done right there. The rest of the cast is inept as well, and the dubbing makes it even painful at points. But we do have acid baths, rifle-butt dentistry and switchblade castrations to look forward to, for the crimedrama gorehounds. Me? I already gave my two stars for the only redeeming reasons to watch - Barbara and Malisa, otherwise this machine grinds to a squeaky halt.

Revenge As A Dish Best Served Gory 25 Oct. 2010
By William Amazzini - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
Director Tulio Demicheli's 'RICCO THE MEAN MACHINE' gets a first class release from Dark Sky Films. I first saw this film badly edited about 20 years back but it still retained power and now , this transfer brings it on in all of its blood soaked glory. American actor Christopher Mitchum (son of Robert) plays the title character who is released from prison for a frameup committed by Mafioso capo Arthur Kennedy in an over the top saliva spewing performance. Revenge is on his mind because Kennedy also stole Ricco's girlfriend played by the stunning Malisa Longo and after you see her, you'll know why Ricco is pissed. Meeting up with a beautiful con artist played by another gorgeous babe, Barbara Bouchet, he plans on taking down the entire syndicate. The film reeks of sleeze and is incredibly nasty in the violence department including an extremely graphic castration scene so it's a relief when you see the eye candy supplied by the female cast. Bouchet was a staple in Euro cinema at the time and also like actress Raquel Welch was never used properly for her acting abilities, however , she has a great nude dance on top of a cars engine hood which gives a new definition to the term Lap Dance. Demichelli keeps things moving at breath taking speed making this one of my favorite guilty pleasures. The transfer is fine in a clean 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and is totally uncut. Highly recommended for fans of Euro Exploitation cinema and for Psychotronic film lovers everywhere. Also check out Mitchum in 'THE SUMMERTIME KILLER' just released by Wild East Productions which has the same revenge motif but a bit more restrained.

70's Classic 9 Mar. 2008
By J. Carnes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
"Ricco The Mean Machine" was just recently released on DVD by DarkSky Films. The film follows a young man (Ricco) who has been released from jail after two years. He returns home to find that his father has been killed and his girlfriend has now become property of the local drug kingpin. Ricco decides to reclaim his woman and avenge his father's murder.
I loved this movie for several reasons. This is a foreign film which has been dubbed in English. Sometimes a dubbed film can become annoying, but you just have to live with it when you are watching a 70's film that is in Italian. It actually wasn't that bad. There aren't many if any special effects and the fight scenes are horribly weak. They are almost comical due to the way they are filmed. Sometimes that is what makes a film like this great. A decent amount of action considering the low budget film category. Simply put this is a classic and I would recommend it to anyone who can appreciate a 1970's crime drama.
Grindhouse exploitation action 25 May 2014
By Grindhouse and Horror - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
This isn't a good type of action film for those who are looking for a quality exploitation action flick. This is an excellent grindhouse flick because it contains a good amount of exploitation, and it showcases corny fight sequences with some good and catchy 70s style soundtracks. There's no full frontal nudity, but the nude scenes with Paola Senatore, Barbara Bouchet, and Malisa Longo are still good; the Bouchet night strip dance is worth mentioning. There's a great and graphic emasculation scene that adds to the grindhouse fun, but the film overall isn't extremely gory; but it has its moments. It usually moves at a good pace and contains some decent scenery in some parts. Christopher Mitchum's cheesball performance as a tough vigilante karate master may have been intended to be serious, but it comes off as being laughable; and that corny but catchy 70s fight music adds to it. Basically, it's a low-budget grindhouse trash action flick, but some modern exploitation fans might find something fun about it.

The interview with Mitchum is good, and you get a still gallery and trailer. The DVD quality is very good overall, but it isn't pristine.
for a good time with some friends make Ricco The Mean Machine ... 23 Jun. 2015
By Joe C. McPherson - Published on Amazon.com

Ricco the Mean Machine is an entertaining film despite its cheesiness. Although the story was a little weak, it was the actors who kept me interested in the film. So, for a good time with some friends make Ricco The Mean Machine a must-see on your movies wish list.
