To be frank, when I first tried this speaker I wasn't impressed, the speaker was sitting on the glass top of my dining room table and the sound produced made me think of amplified tones produced through an old telephone handset.

That said, when I took it over to the coffee table, playing my Nano whilst feeding my infant son (mainly out of laziness and for a distraction for him) I left it on its side instead of the base facing down and it sounded much better. So I tried it upside down and that also sounded better than the right way up too. Therefore, I think the surface it sits on quite markedly affects the tonal qualities produced.

The sound is not as good as my x-mini (it's obviously restricted due to its tiny size; slightly over half that of the x-mini) but where it really scores for me is its practicality; a lot of thought has gone into producing this tiny speaker, it's extremely compact and portable, right down to it its self-winding retractable cable.

The 'on' button is the LED on top, which I learned from a different reviewer, (the instructions are pretty poor), I thought it was the central silicon disc on the base which I pressed whilst it was laying upside down on the table, not realising it was actually the protruding LED pressing against the flat table top!

In conclusion, if you're an audiophile you'll doubtless be unimpressed with this speaker, but if you're just after a portable speaker to slip into your pocket for listening to audiobooks/digital recorders or just want hear your music without having to wear earphones then this could be right up your street. It grew on me perhaps it will for you too.

There's a huge variety of mini speakers like this on the market now - but this must be one of the lightest and smallest. Its design is very "minimalist" - in that you have one control and one input. In fact the on/off switch on the top, doubles as a power indicator/light which glows blue when on - something that is not entirely clear from the instructions, which are poorly written with no diagrams. However, the operation of something like this is so simple and intuitive, that this won't matter to most people.

The case is made of aluminium, which makes it strong yet light and has a small rubber foot on the bottom which anchors it firmly enough to something like a desk. The big selling point though, is that this is "ultra" portable; with its own built-in rechargable battery and neat, multi-function cable. Most cables are given little thought, but this one is very neatly designed to avoid tangling, while allowing you to pull out extra lengths, either side of a central spool and set it with a notch at the required extension. One end connects to the speaker and the other to a combined USB or mini jack connection. This allows connection of audio to something like an iPod via the jack or a laptop/tablet using the USB - it also allows you to charge from any device with a USB - when the light shines red.

The whole assembly fits rather neatly in a soft bag provided and allows you to have a portable sound system with your mobile device of choice, in one of the smallest packages available. I think you have to admire the way this has been put together and designed to get the maximum out of such a small, neat unit. However, I can't really give it top marks for sound and this was not much better than most built-in laptop speakers.

We love mini speakers in this house and have tried a lot of the latest for use with android tablets, mobile phones and iphones as well as our laptops so I think I can honestly say I we are now finely attuned to what is good and bad about mini speakers.

First - this is small. I mean REALLY small. It is so small that it would fit into a closed hand. It looks shiny and slick, and has a 'quality' feel about it.

On unwrapping I couldnt wait to try it and as I tried to turn it on was totally bamboozled. ..Where on earth is the on/off switch? After a few head scratching moments I'd worked out that the whole of the top of the speaker is actually the on /off switch (Cool! - no extra buttons). There is a light to let you know when the unit is swithed on.

Next, grab the extendable wires with USB charger attachment, give a sharp tug to open it, plug in then..wow! I was really surprised how loud it is! The sound is really good, although it's not heavy on the bass, it has good clear treble, and playback is a nice quality. This is fantastic for travelling. It's truly portable. Sounds good and looks really cool.

It is charged via a USB on your PC or laptop. Alternatively you could plug into your phones USB adapter.

The instructions are awful, totally useless but this is so simple you wont worry about that minor niggle.

Cant comment in battery life yet as it still hasnt run out but will update...so far so good! Lithium batterys are usually excellent so I'm expecting good things.

All in all this is a good quality, strong looking little speaker and perfect to pop into your pocket for travelling.

My only niggle is the off button - which needs bit of pressure and it has to be picked up to switch off. Loses a star for this. Otherwise..very happy.
