Product Description

Review

Peter Wright has done lovers of wild places a great service in providing the first comprehensive description of the Watershed. -- Chris Townsend, TGO (The Great Outdoors)

No other journey can give so sublime a sense of unity a feeling of how the Nation's various different landscapes link together to form a coherent whole. -- The Scotsman

Ribbon of Wildness gives a vivid introduction to this hitherto largely unknown geographic feature ... -- The Geographer, RSGS.

'Prize Book' -- Scottish Wildlife, Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT)

Ribbon of Wildness will inspire others to view more than a few of the wondrous landscapes of Scotland whilst basking in their wildness. -- SWT

The watershed is visionary a lovely concept. Dedicated to mark the centenary of the death of John Muir, in 2014, it`s hard to find a more fitting tribute. -- The Scotsman

A remarkable and incredible journey which others will most surely want to tackle. --STV (The Hour)

Simply the best outdoors book I have read in a long time. -- John Muir Trust member

Nothing showy or brash about it, just a gentle reminder of the author's on-going love affair with the landscapes of Scotland. Absorbing account of a strenuous and meandering walk from Peel Fell on the Border to Duncansby Head, Caithness all without crossing a stream. --Scotland in Trust, National Trust for Scotland

Product Description

If you've bagged the Munros, done the Caledonian Challenge and walked the West Highland Way, this is your next conquest. The Watershed of Scotland is a line that separates east from west; that divides those river basin areas which drain towards the North Sea on the one hand, and those which flow west into the Atlantic Ocean on the other. It s a line that meanders from Peel Fell on the English border all the way to the top at Duncansby Head, near John O Groats over 745 miles, through almost every kind of terrain. The Watershed follows the high ground, and offers wide vistas down major river valleys, towards towns and communities, into the heartlands of Scotland. 'Ribbon of Wildness' provides a vivid introduction to this geographic and landscape feature, which has hitherto been largely unknown. The rock, bog, forest, moor and mountain are all testament to the Watershed's richly varied natural state. The evolving kaleidoscope of changing vistas, wide panoramas, ever-present wildlife, and the vagaries of the weather, are delightfully described on this great journey of discovery.

I read Dave Hewitt's "Walking the Watershed" years ago and have reread it several times since. I expected this book to be perhaps more professional and similarly entertaining. I was very disappointed as there is little human interaction in this account and I quickly became bored of the endless conservancy information which could easily have been referenced instead of being constantly mentioned in what seemed to be every other sentence. No mention of anyone he met, anywhere he shared an experience or enjoyed a conversation with. All in all a boring high brow account without any human interest or even information about each climb or day. Not what I expected or hoped for. Unless you want to know about SSI's etc. don't waste your money - read Dave Hewitt's account , it's much more interesting and twice as informative about the route.

As a Munroist I have a shelf full of Scottish Mountain books. How would this book compare when Scotland's Watershed route included 44 Munros and 24 Corbetts?
This has proved to be a totally different mountain walking book. It reveals a majestic natural environment with a wide range of biodiversity. It does not overlook historical facts giving the reader so much else besides.
Yes, original in its concept, also delivering numerous anecdotes and quotations.
The research here is really impressive. The bibliography lists 42 books and there are 16 pages of appendices.
The author's enthusiasm for the walk in hand will impress everyone who dares to open this book. A grand tribute to John Muir.

I've not enjoyed an outdoors book as much as Ribbon of Wildness for many years. Many congratulations on an epic idea and walk and a beautifully written, thoughtful book-it's refreshing to read a writer who treads carefully through his own pages-by which I mean we don't always need to know every detail of every camp and brewsite etc. I love the idea of a wild walk that takes in an urban landscape too.
Great idea, great book. Now how what happens if you travel south from Peel Fell and head in the general direction of Dover?
