5.0 out of 5 stars A selection of Afghans for all abilities 19 April 2009
This book contains 45 different afghan patterns. Although they are not all to my taste, there are certainly enough that I like to make me very pleased that I bought the book. Ther are several patterns to suit beginners - many are different variations on the traditional granny square, also several patterns to suit the intermediate and experienced crocheter. As an experienced crocheter I sometimes enjoy making more complicated afghans and sometimes enjoy a break with a simple pattern. I especially liked making Noah's Ark - (falls into the "experienced" category)-which has a picture of Noah's Ark in the centre, side borders of separately crocheted animals (Elephants, sheep, giraffes, camels), top border of clouds with a rainbow and a bottom border containing Mr and Mrs Noah. It looked really good when finished, ideal for the nursery, although it did take quite a time to make!
Another useful afghan is "Baby's ABC Afghan". Not only is this an attractive blanket as it is, but it could also be fairly easily adapted to make a personalised blanket with baby's own name by using the letter charts supplied.
The afghan on the cover ("Kaleidoscope") is also fun to do and I was pleased to see that there are patterns for half-hexagons to go down the sides included as this prevents the unattractive "gappy" look border you get with a blanket made only of complete hexagons.
All in all an extremely good buy - mine is well-thumbed already!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 9 Oct 2010
I have to say that I've read the other reviews of this book and am happy to say I didn't believe the negative one. This is a lovely book full of interesting and varied level afghan projects. The instructions are clear and concise, and presented in a pleasing manner. There are pictures of every afghan alongside the instructions.

I have to say that I also enjoyed reading the snippets on the history of U.S State Fairs in general. Very fascinating. If you buy this book you won't be disappointed. Unlike Ms Cousins, I wouldn't give my copy of this book away for anything. Excellent in every way!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful book 13 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have owned this book for about a year now and it is one of my favorites.

Not all the afghans are to my taste, but most are and most have been completed. The Noahs arc is very good and as it is done in several sections and different stiches it goes up very quickly and does not get boring.

Everything already written about this book (not the negative review) is correct and more so. The front cover hexagon afghan is easier to make than it looks and looks great once done.

The instructions are easy to follow the book is well written and presented and I am so pleased I bought it

If you only want one book on afghans make it this one you will not be dissapointed

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept, but... 17 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book largely because of the Afghan on the front cover, and I expected the others to be equally unusual, but was slightly disappointed that quite a lot of the projects inside are truly awful! This is definitely aimed at the american market - there are TWO projects based on the american flag. That said, there are some lovely afghans, and I'll probably try 4 or 5 of them at some point, but the one on the front cover is, in my view, the highlight and none of the others come close
