So funny 29 Mar 2003
By Lisa
Format:DVD
This DVD was filmed on Rhona's UK tour in November 2000.

The show itself is so funny. Rhona is an incredibly witty and funny woman, and her observational humour is so spot on. Her humour is incredibly easy to relate to... you find yourself watching thinking "Oh my god! That is so true! I've noticed that!"... but she presents it in such a funny way.

The nature of her humour and the observations she makes obviously give her appeal to a lesbian audience... but trust me when I say that there is material in this DVD for everyone. She is one of the few comics that manages to write incredibly funny material without the need to write anything which is offensive to any groups in our society.

Unfortunately, the camera work and the lighting in the feature on the DVD don't do it justice. The lighting is so bad that it's only when I saw her live personally and she was wearing the same suit that she wears in the feature that I realised the suit is actually a kind of purple... in the video it's really not obvious because of the poor lighting.

The camera's are only set up in a couple of different positions, so not only do you only see Rhona from 3 different angles, there is also no shots of the audience's reactions to her jokes which at points could've enhanced the humour (especially at the end when she takes questions from the audience and you can barely hear what the audience are asking). There are also some places where the editing of the visual image is inappropriate (like at the end of her main set when she takes a bow before going off and coming back on for an encore, the image on screen is just a close up of the microphone which she is standing nowhere near so you can't even see her, and then the image suddenly cuts to her taking her bow like the editor suddenly thought "Oooo... whoops... we're not actually showing Rhona")

The extras on the DVD version of this show are a trailer for the DVD and a half an hour long tour documentary, which includes her being interviewed by the comedian Adam Bloom. The tour documentary is almost as hilarious as the feature itself (funny moments including among others Rhona getting told off for playing football in a hotel car park). It also includes footage of amusing incidents from other gigs on her national tour... aside the gig which is shown in the main feature. Ironically, the lighting, camera work and editing are far better on this DVD extra than on the feature itself.

However... despite the poor quality of the lighting, camera work and editing on the feature, I cannot stress how highly I would recommend this DVD. The quality of Rhona's writing and delivery more than make up for the technical "problems". The opening sequence which shows Rhona backstage before the show is fantastically put together, and the end where Rhona sings is also a brilliant moment.

Get it. Enjoy it. It's definitely a DVD worth owning and watching over and over again.
