5.0 out of 5 stars Rhoda: Remastered and Complete Thanks! 28 April 2010
By Gregory Shanley VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Verified Purchase
After all the complaints about season one of "Rhoda" being in poor picture quality and many episodes edited,Shout Factory have listened to the complaints and we can now enjoy the complete season2,unedited and in great picture quailty, too!

Valerie Harper returns, still happily married to Joe(David Groh)dealing with the stress and strains of life in 70s New York, with the never confident younger sister Brenda(Julie Kavner),domineering mother Ida(Nancy Walker)the quiet Father,Martin(Harold Gould)and the voice of the always drunk doorman,Carlton(Lorenzo Music).
Ruth Gordon makes a memorable guest appearance as Carlton's Mother,"Knots Landing" star Joan Van Ark(Valene)appears as Joe's bitchy ex-wife,Marion and "I Love Lucy" Star,Vivian Vance appears as an older neighbour of Rhoda's who makes Ida jealous,of their friendship.

Like the "Mary Tyler Moore Show",that "Rhoda" spun off from, serious issues are tackled too amongst the laughs, like money worries, jealousy, the temptation of infedility, equality but all done with great humour and never in a preachy manner.

So go back to the 70s and catch Valerie Harper as the mouthy but kind hearted Rhoda and the scene stealing Nancy Walker as the guilt dishing Ida Morgenstern.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vibrant, remastered UNEDITED hilarious second season 20 Feb 2010
By Pageturner in NYC - Published on Amazon.com
I got an advance copy of the DVD set and it's great! Four DVDs (containing all 24 season two episodes) in two plastic cases slide inside a cardboard slipcase. All episodes have been vibrantly remastered and are uncut (running times are almost always 24 mins and 55 seconds). This is a big improvement over season one, that had too many edited-for-syndication episodes (including a cameo appearance of Mary Tyler Moore playing Mary Richards in the pilot episode!). Almost every season of RHODA had a slightly different theme song--season one had the "My name is Rhoda Morganstern..." opening; season two replaces her narration with "La-la-la-la-la"s. Guests this season include Ruth Gordon (an EMMY nominated performance as Carlton the doorman's mother), Vivian Vance, Jack Gilford, Eileen Heckert, John Ritter, Norman Fell (as a doctor Ida thinks she's having an affair with), Tim Matheson, Joan Van Ark (as Joe's first wife) and Ron SIlver (but not as Gary Levy). This second season is filled with hilarious, well-written episodes. Besides Ruth Gordon's nomination, this 1975--76 season earned EMMY nominations for Valerie Harper (she'd won the previous year), Julie Kavner (who'd finally win in the fourth season), and Nancy Walker (who earned 7 EMMY nominations between McMILLAN & WIFE, RHODA and a guest shot on THE GOLDEN GIRLS--and never won; she was the Thelma Ritter of TV). Sadly, there's no extras (you'd think Valerie Harper would be happy to do a commentary or two or film a short rememberance of the series). But the set is beautiful looking, unedited, and still wildly funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait for Season 2!! 16 Oct 2009
By Grant Richards - Published on Amazon.com
I'm so excited that Shout is releasing Season 2 of Rhoda. This is such a great series and this is one of the best seasons. This season focuses on Rhoda and Joe's married life and it is a lot of fun. Shout is releasing it with complete and remastered!! Let's all support it so that "Phyllis" will be released. That would be so wonderful!

3.0 out of 5 stars SOME FUN - BUT A SERIES IN RAPID DECLINE 14 May 2010
By DEAN - Published on Amazon.com

The quality of these shows is just great - picture and sound are excellent and all episodes are unedited. Of course it makes you question why the first season is not available in the same wonderful condition. Anyone know the reason???

Unfortunately after viewing this season (I had seen these episodes originally when aired in 1975-1976) I felt sad realizing how poor most of the episodes were. With the exception of the one where Rhoda meets Joe's ex-wife and the one guest starring the great Vivian Vance (which ironically gave Nancy Walker her best perfomance this season) most of the rest of the episodes were contrived, labored and just plain boring. Many of the episodes revolved around Brenda's lackluster life with Rhoda being the sage "sidekick". In any event it is just inconceivable that such a top notch writing team could not be more creative, ie. realistic character development, introducing new interesting characters, presenting more topical situations, etc.

I once read a TV sitcom review book published in the early 80s which contained the comment "how did Rhoda the soaring become Rhoda the boring?" Well we can conjecture on the "how" but this season is definitely the "when". It is really a shame!!!
