Product Description

Product Description

These three great plays by one of the founding fathers of the theatre of the absurd, are alive and kicking with tragedy and humour, bleakness and farce. In Rhinoceros we are shown the innate brutality of people as everyone, except for Berenger, turn into clumsy, unthinking rhinoceroses. The Chairs depicts the futile struggle of two old people to convey the meaning of life to the rest of humanity, while The Lesson is a chilling, but anarchically funny drama of verbal domination. In these three 'antiplays' dream, nonsense and fantasy combine to create an unsettling, bizarre view of society.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You've a Sense of Humour You'll Love This, 22 July 2011
By
Gerald Urch - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: "Rhinoceros", "The Chairs", and "The Lesson" (Paperback)
I first came across Ionesco when I saw the `The Chairs' performed at the Theatre Royal in Bath last year. It was so different and I was so fascinated that I went back and seen it again a couple of days later, it was just as good the second time around. I was hooked!
There's nothing like live theatre of course but having read this book of his plays I found them a great read. My advice would be to try and not over-analyse them or try to make sense of them! They are not standard drama. They are daft and imaginary tales but still somehow remain believable to the reader. You soon become enveloped in the absurd!
These plays will undoubtedly make you laugh but they are brilliantly put together and all have very unexpected ending as any classic should.
If you're a `Mr Serious' and you like standard drama / fiction then you probably won't enjoy these plays because they're so `off the wall.'
Providing you've got a sense of humour and wonderment then I'm sure you'll love them.
I can't wait for one of his plays to appear near me again - I'll be there like a shot.
Finally, I've read many reviews of what these plays say or mean but most for me are totally OTT. Some say they are even political? Well, I gave up a long time ago trying to analyse them. I think they should be just enjoyed for what they are. Most analysts are probably miles off the mark anyway and that's if there's any undercurrent or message at all?

Excellent sense of humor, short and easy to read. Very good example of the funny side of the theater of the absurd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent item, immaculate delivery, 25 Jan 2011
This review is from: "Rhinoceros", "The Chairs", and "The Lesson" (Paperback)
The item was brand new, quickly delivered in excellent condition. If you are happy with the content you are going for, the product is decent and does the job. I am not perfectly happy because I am not keen on the paperback (it even gets damp in the cold days) but I was not promised something else. So you get what you see and good value for money(the particular is not easy to find in bookstores). I also recommend it for the content!
