In the culture of the galaxy, the Star-Pilots of the starships that link the cosmos together have become the great heroes of the day. This whole series is a minor masterpiece, a chunk of sci-fi-noir so exquisitly dark and brilliantly introspective I can only compare it to Chandler at his best. It's that good, I promise.

Rhapsody in Black is the second in the Hooded Swan (aka Grainger) series by Stableford, and while it is a good read I find the whole thing a little too dark and gloomy as compared to others in this series. The main character is a gritty and grumpy exaggeration of the man-in-charge of a space ship. Even though technically he's not in charge. However, despite his negativity and foibles one does gain an endearment to Grainger.
One thing of note is that Brain Stapleford's knowledge of biology really shines through in parts of this book, making a believable scenario of the centrepiece of the plot. Worth the read.
