This is not a book for Kennedy enthusiasts. It's not the usual hagiography of Robert Kennedy that has become standard fare since his death.
Those who criticise its content focus only on what it has to say about his sexual escapades. Clearly this chafes his fans considerably. Whether or not the stories have any basis in fact is disregarded in favour of the usual misty-eyed view of a fallen hero. The key is to examine Heymann's references and sources. He quotes in the main from personal interviews. Simply because he has been told things which are unpalatable to RFK fans doesn't make them untrue.
His sexual indiscretions do not form the greater part of the book and it is an inaccurate and biased assessment to infer that the book has nothing positive to say about RFK. The book looks at all sides of this complex and powerful man: his political views, his support for his brother, his role as a husband and father and his ambitions.
This book says more about the whole man than any number of the usual saintly appraisals.

David Heymann's biography of Robert Kennedy is called RFK. Hardly an original name but it is an original book. Kennedy is an American hero both for his partnership with his brother between 1961 and 1963 and his own bid for the residency, which ended so tragically. Heymann is a superb biography writer who produced the epic A Woman Named Jackie some years ago. He is more at home with Robert Kennedy and you can rely on him for a balanced account. But who knows the accuracy of all the stuff that is banded about the Kennedy brothers' sexual appetite? Heymann recounts it all and the most devastating accusation is that he enjoyed an affair with John Kennedy's widow and his sister-in-law, Jackie Kennedy. As a biographer of both of them, Heymann should know but it is interesting that none of these accusations were made until Jackie Kennedy was dead. Robert Kennedy, a man who fathered 11 children, is accused in the book of having affairs with Marilyn Monroe, Candice Bergen, Kim Novak and Jayne Mansfield. In fact, almost all of the blonde Hollywood stars of the time. And this is where the story becomes suspect. The book contains a disturbing photo I have not seen before of Bobby just after he was shot and is still conscious with his head being cradled by his wife. Notwithstanding that, this book is the best Bobby Kennedy biography so far with equally compelling reasons why it is a perfect present to give or receive.

Yes I am sure there are factually correct bits in this book but sometimes I wondered which were true, especially the parts relating to Bobby's private life. Yes, he was no saint. But I don't believe half of what is asserted in this book went on. I have heard somewhere that the author always wanted to write a fiction book, I guess he comes pretty close here in parts. I will say the only definite thing about this book which is true is the front cover. Buy one of the other books about RFK (Robert Kennedy - His Life by Evan Thomas is a great book) if you want to get a balanced picture not a one sided character assassination.
