I am so absorbed in this masterpiece I already fear for it to end. Halfway through in one day's worth of reading I have never witnessed a book so full of emotion with such a fast and natural pace. I was warned that this book was "excruciatingly slow", however I couldn't disagree less. The lives of the two characters and their surroundings are so enchanting, though in a very dark way - I would disagree with the people who says it's "unbearably depressing", because it is very bearable and VERY much worth it.

The characters are amongst the best I have ever read about, and I feel a very strong relation to both of them. I keep going on and on and on about this book to my poor partner, because this is DEFINITELY a read.

I recently started reading again after I got my kindle for christmas, having not done so in over 5 years, and this has been such a good start for me that the little reading device seems to have been glued into my hands. I absolutely love this book.

I bought my Kindle as soon as it was released in the UK amd have been delighted with both the product and the very wide selection of books available. The only disappointment was that I couldn't download books by Richard Yates, my very favourite author, as the publisher hadn't yet released them to the Kindle format. Good news today when I checked the Kindle library and saw that 6 of his novels have been released over the last week, including Revolutionary Road, his most famous novel. I can't recommend these books highly enough, all of them. Beautifully written, evocative and thought provoking yet written in a straightforward and direct style, spare and to the point. Please try them (any of them) if you haven't already done so. I guarantee you'll be hooked from Chapter 1.

Outstanding American Realism 21 May 2012
By Mr. Steiner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A truly great work of post-war realism. Yates' masterful novel is situated in the booming years of conformity in a squarely middle class suburb, where a young couple is struggling to preserve their inner vitality in a society that insists on mediocrity. Frank Wheeler is happily married to the beautiful and intelligent April-though it is a marriage strained by the exigencies of an unplanned birth. Frank works quietly and disinterestedly in sales until April proposes a radical move to Europe in order to save their freedom and talent. While Yates' preoccupation with the demands of modern American life are practically a cliché by now, Revolutionary Road never slides into the hackneyed or obvious. The crisp purity of Yate's prose-as well as his masterful sense of character, provide the support for this great little book as it moves into the depths of genuine tragedy.
American classic 31 Oct 2011
By booksbooksbooks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
An inheritor of the gorgeous prose of Fitzgerald, Yates documents the disintegration of a marriage, and in turn, the disintegration of an elusive 1950s ideal and the country as a whole. If you're at all interested in deeply American themes, read this one.

revolutionary bore 1 May 2011

while the themes and premise of this book are timeless and thought provoking, i found this book to be tedious and outright boring up until the last few pages. but then maybe that, along with all the charcters being unlikable, is the point. very disappointing after all the rave reviews i read.
