Book Description

Part of Pluto's 21st birthday series Get Political, which brings essential political writing in a range of fields to a new audience.

This is an entirely new collection of Lenin's writing. For the first time it brings together crucial shorter works, to show that Lenin held a life-long commitment to freedom and democracy. Le Blanc has written a comprehensive introduction, which gives an accessible overview of Lenin's life and work, and explains his relevance to political thought today.

Lenin has been much maligned in the mainstream, accused of viewing 'man as modeling clay' and of 'social engineering of the most radical kind.' However, in contrast to today's world leaders, who happily turn to violence to achieve their objectives, Lenin believed it impossible to reach his goals 'by any other path than that of political democracy.'

This collection will be of immense value to students encountering Lenin for the first time, and those looking for a new interpretation of one of the 20th century's most inspiring figures.

Review

We desperately need the resurrection and revival of the kind of strategic thinking and principled commitment that Lenin epitomised in the era of 1917, and all that it promised. For those interested in this rebirth of the politics of alternative to capitalism, Paul Le Blanc’s account of the democratic, socialist, and revolutionary Lenin will prove indispensable. Reading it is a reminder that what is, need not be, and that what has, seemingly, failed, can be reconstituted anew. (Professor Bryan Palmer, Trent University, author of E. P. Thompson: Objections and Oppositions and James P. Cannon and the Origins of the American Revolutionary Left )

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 18 Feb 2013

Good book which looks at Lenin's thought. Book offers insight into relevance of Lenin to today. Some critique of Lenin is offered but Rosa Luxembourg is quoted in explaining the severe challenges of launching a socialist revolution in a backward country whilst being attacked by strong imperialist countries. This was a much more refreshing read than the right wing rant which is offered from the book by Robert Service on Lenin. I like the explanatory notes before each section which seek to give context and explanation which I cannot get by just reading Lenin's work directly. Much recommended.
