This is an amazing internet radio...Revo have made an incredible sounding package that also manages to look good too. Heritage was great, but this radio is a step further in terms of sound quality and functionality.
The radio is very similar to the Heritage in functionality - its a DAB/FM/Internet radio with Last FM thrown in too - a free 3-month subscription is provided to this service. The radio was quick and easy to set-up right out of the box and I was quickly connected to my wi-fi. Scanning for DAB stations was easy too - it found all of the main DAB stations available in my region without needing the antenna extended. Internet radio is activated via the Frontier Silicon website - 1000's of stations are available, but the website itself (needed to set-up favourites) is clunky and awkward to navigate. Listen again functionality is also available through the radio menu - there is a section of BBC stations which all have podcasts associated with them and they can be easily navigated to via the radio controls. However I found that some of the Listen Again broadcasts cut out after a few minutes and it was not possible to resume the playback where they had cut-off. Something to look at I think, although its not critical for the K2 - you can dock your Ipod or Ipad and play BBC listen again easily with no issues.
Navigating round the radio menus can be done 3 ways - either from the buttons on the radio - Most of the buttons are on the top of the radio which is made of a hard rubber - the rubber gets dusty quickly and the action of the buttons is not great - they feel awkward and sluggish. The remote control provided is much better - and so is the Iphone/Ipod application that is free to download from the Apple Store. The application is called Remote Control and it connects to the K2 via wi-fi, allowing full control of the radio from within range of a wi-fi router. Excellent stuff.
Docking an ipod or ipad is easy- there is a button on the side of the radio that activates a motorised docking point. One irritation is that if the radio isn't placed on a smooth table, the docking point doesn't come out easily. It takes Ipod/Ipad - I couldn't get my Iphone 4 to work though - and only provides a trickle charge for the ipad.
Two configurable alarms are provided - these are easy to set-up and are reliable, not depending on an external server to operate. The blue/green LED display is eye catching and has three levels of brightness associated with it - very elegant.
But the main reason to buy this radio is the sound quality - warm, deep bass and detailed mid/top ranges mean that you will enjoy playing back your favourite music through this radio - it has to be heard to be believed. It really is hard to imagine how good this radio sounds - it packs a punch for it's size with 40W of output.
The K2 is astounding - it would score a top 5 stars except for the niggles - the rubberised top control panel, the built in Listen Again functionality which means less than 50% of the selected podcasts play back without cutting off somewhere, the Frontier Silicon website - it really does need an update, the user manual which has EQ details ( presets and loudness are detailed) that don't exist on the radio, meaning that you have to configure the EQ yourself.
I'm sure Revo will fix some of the niggles in a SW update - but actually these are all minor cons - the appearance of this radio along with the sound quality puts it in a different league from anything else on the market in this price bracket - proving that British can be best!
