Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Mr. G. D. Stewart on 8 Dec. 2007
Format: Paperback
I read the orginal which, as Gill himself notes, went out of print before anyone noticed it. This new work is excellent as was the original. As with Maynard Keynes, Gill makes the essential point that it is necessary to know the numbers, the demographics behind the reality. The empty church is a barrier to new adherents and is part of the folly of building churches and chapels even when populations are falling - as was commonly the case in 19th century Britain. Older people who claimed to "remember" full churches in their youth *cannot* have been correct when in many parts of the country there were more pews than people as early as *1851*!!

Excellent and original work - highly recommended.
