Product Description

Product Description

Since its first publication in the United Kingdom in 1990, the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible has established itself as one of the finest modern translations of the biblical text ever produced. Already extensively used in theological faculties in major universities and colleges, this version is not only ideal for academic work but also lends itself perfectly to liturgical worship, group Bible study in parishes, and personal reading. The work of Anglicization has been undertaken with considerable care in Britain, with the full support, encouragement and active participation of leading academics from the USA, who were responsible for the original work of translation. By this means the foundational scholarship which undergirds the NRSV has been safeguarded, but enhanced for readers in the United Kingdom, and other countries where Brtitish usage is preferred. The changes made to the text do not impair the translation, but rather ensure that the meaning is immediately clear for the reader. This has particular implications for the use of the NRSV in public worship, where the natural flow of language is vitally important. Equally the use of unfamiliar phrases will no longer interrupt the reader's concentration in personal use, nor will such matters distract users in study groups.

NRSV Bible 17 Mar 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a new(ish) version of The Bible which is used in many C of E churches today. The language is more easily understandable in today's world and in this modern translation some words have been replaced e.g. "love" instead of "charity" in a passage often used at weddings. This is a nice version for modern or first time readers.

No apologetics 17 Jan 2008
Format:Hardcover
[This review completely rewritten to be more concise]

The NRSV is a modern translation, towards the literal, word-for-word end of the spectrum - though with one exception, which is that it tries very hard to be gender neutral. One might say it tries a bit too hard in this area, though personally it's not an issue I care about.

The NRSV has two main features that I find attractive:

1. It makes little or no effort to harmonise or "smooth-out" contradictions or problems.

2. It doesn't try to (mis)translate the Old Testament for the sake of being consistent with the interpretations of it made by the New Testament authors.

Depending on your point of view, these may seem like bad things rather than features. If you want a Bible made with a more "inerrantist" philosophy, I'd recommend the English Standard Version instead. But it's my belief that the NRSV does a good job of translating the original text without distortion.

I was looking for a Bible which was written in modern understandable language but retaining the original text. This Version is exactly right for me. Written in everyday English it is an up to date version of the King James Version, which is liked by many, but found the 1600 language difficult to fully understand. I have bought others in the past but those versions have lost total comprehensibility, I was missing the meaning of many passages. This Bible will be with me for many years to come, and be the only source of the Anglicized Faith for me.

A useful definitive edition of The Bible.
I bought this because I wanted a modern translation that included both Old and New Testaments. Not being familiar with the books of the Apocrypha I regarded them as a bonus. Read more
