Book Description

24 Jun 2012
By the same A uthor. THE SHORTER LATIN PRIMER. Fcp. 8vo. price ONE SHILLING. AUTHORS PREFACE. Tnis little boofc is published in compliance with a wish expressed to me by a large number of Masters, including many teachers in Preparatory Schools, and in the lower forms of Public Schools. It is intended to be a simple manual for beginners in Latin, preparatory to the use of the Revised Latin Primer. In order to facilitate the passage of the learner from one book to the other, and also to make it possible for them to be used side by side if necessary, this Shorter Primer has been made, as far as it goes, in the main identical with the Revised Primer, and arranged on the same plan. It contains the memorial portion of the A ccidence, with a few of the most important notes and explanations, and the more elementary parts of the Syntax of the Simple Sentence. A short outline of the Compound Sentence, which did not form part of my original plan, has been added in accordance with the desire of several experienced teachers, In this part it has been necessary, for the sake of brevity, to make the arrangement and wording somewhat different from that of the Revised Primer, In this book, as in the Revised Primer, I have endeavoured to simplify the marking of quantity by placing the mark of quantity, as a rule, only on the long vowels. It must therefore be noted that vowels not marked are generally to be taken as short, short quantity being only marked wnere it has seemed necessary to guard against mistake. EXERCISES ON THE SHORTER LATIN PRIMER. By M. G. and J. E. KENNEDY, and H. WILKINSON, M.A. Crown 8vo. 1. 6d. LONGMANS, GREEN, CO. 39 Paternoster Row, London, New York, and Bombay.

Clear and easy to use, Kennedy's renowned textbook contains anything a student of Latin could hope to know, from tables of nouns and verbs to obscure nuances of style. Millions od lines running into one another, syntax completely unreadable and lots of spelling mistakes - stick to Kennedy's primer with red cover that is excellent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy a different edition 2 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
The book itself is almost indispensable for a Latinist, either as a learner or an academic. However, this edition, as advertised here on Amazon, is made with "print on demand" technology. The scanning process is so bare-bones that none of the formatting required to make sense of a reference book such as this remains in place - the book is rendered as a block of text with no markers to help you find what you're looking for. The best advice I can give is to ignore this listing and go for a different edition.

NB: The inside of this book as I received it looked nothing like the "look inside" preview of this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars (Re)-learning latin 30 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
Admirably clear and it would be a pity to modernise (dumb down?) the English. However, as it is essentially a reference book, it does need to be used in conjunction with a conventional textbook with excercises, when used by a beginner.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Revised latin Primer (Classic Reprint) 3 Oct 2012

The Revised Latin Primer (Classic Reprint)
This edition of The Revised Latin Primer is a disgrace. It appears to have been produced on a poor quality home printer with an inadequate ink supply and a faulty paper feed. Type was misaligned, words were missing in whole or in part, some pages were defaced with ink blotches. It is quite useless for either learning or teaching. I have taught latin for over 50 years, and have never seen anything worse. The only good news about it is the speed and efficiency with which my money was repaid when I returned it. If you need this book, buy the Longman edition. It costs more, but the quality is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best quality I have ever seen. 10 Jan 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I wanted a copy to refresh memory and for brushing up on English and ding crosswords.
It is in such good condition and the cover a colour I had never seen that I took it round to my brother to show him what I school books had looked like long before we had them to use. A joy with many happy memories of great school teachers long past on but always remembered with respect and affection.
I have still got "Room for improvement" !
