Review

"The book covers all aspects of the physiology of the human body. The physiology of the nervous system is presented early in the book, which is advisable since the nervous system plays a significant role in the function of the other body systems. " "A major strength is the regular revision, which provides as up-to-date information as possible in a book of this type." "...it is an excellent source of current and complete information on medical physiology." Doody's 20030616 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point! 9 July 2003
By Nehwyn
Format:Paperback
Medical students everywhere have to fight between the need for complete comprehension of concepts and the limited time available for study... between the vast sea of notions that makes up modern Medicine and the need to stay focused on the really important aspects of each discipline. Well, Ganong is probably the best solution. Coming from a rather convoluted physiology textbook that drowned me with historical considerations and experimental methods, I was looking for a text that could not only provide detailed information with clarity and ease of use, but that also had to be extremely up-to-date. I found all that in Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology and thus I strongly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent with caveat 29 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
An excellent book for medical physiology, however one would be better off studying another book e.g. Guyton ,for cell and nervous system physiology. It is a shame that these two topics were so badly written as the book overall is a wonderful reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best physiology review 27 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I think a lot of people misunderstand the purpose of Ganong - it is not designed as a comprehensive textbook of physiology, but rather as a review book to complement lecture notes and notes taken from more detailed texts. It covers all the important themes and stresses the most pertinent details, as well as highlighting recent discoveries. Seen in this light it does the job exceptionally well. It is up to date (new edition every 2 years) and offers a broad overview of physiology and some topics in neuroscience, genetics and biochemistry. There are a number of useful diagrams and while these may not be beautifully coloured they are simple and easy to understand. The sections on the nervous system and endocrinology are particularly strong. Perhaps the most important recommendation I can give for it is that students who told me they used and liked Ganong tended to be the ones that did better in their exams - be they medical undergraduates or house officers. I do not say this book is the be-all-and-end-all for the study of physiology, but I really think you would be at a disadvantage if you don't at least try it out. Many successful students and doctors swear by it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars No unnecessary details 6 Oct 2002
Format:Paperback
Wow!
This is a compact book. 1 page of Ganong = 10 pages of "other" physiology books. Saves time for you. Has a good layout with handy tables, pictures and easy-to-read language. Excellently indexed. I recommend every new medical student to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bible of Medical Physiology 28 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
Although this book might not be suitable for beginners, it is definitely a must have if you want to get anywhere far with physiology! As a medical student myself, I find that other texts do not give such details which this book has and often I would use this book for further studies/references.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise yet detailed 17 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
Lange's Review of Medical Physiology is an excellent study and revision tool for medical students and doctors alike. An enormous amount of information is covered, but it is broken down into small, easy to read chunks.
There is a huge number of diagrams, all of which are clear, well labelled and easy to understand.
The evidence base of much of the content is well explained, and clinical detail is rife. There are aspects of pathology and pharmacology included to show how the physiology goes wrong during disease.
Whether you struggle with physiology or like to read around the subject this book is for you. It is ideal for both last minute revision and in depth study. Plenty of practice questions are included to test knowledge, and the content is well up to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 20 Oct 2007
By Sammy
Format:Paperback
As a medical student constantly on the look out for books worthy of reading and using as a revision tool, I have to say, that few books come close to Ganong's book. Throughout an excellent, clear and concise style has been used- obviously characteristics that make it very user-friendly.

I suppose the only problem for me is that being British, I have to get used to some of the American terms and identify what they are called in UK medical schools (e.g. norepinephrine and noradrenaline). However, these things are only very superficial, and do not devalue the book in any way.

I thoroughly recommend this book.
