A forgotten classic, 25 Jul 2006
I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of this on R1. It's a somewhat messy film probably due to the rumours that the producers re-edited it long after Tony Scott had finished shooting. The story labours a little at the beginning, and Costner's character is kind of hard to root for because he's not all that pleasant, but that's part of Revenge's charm. It's not clear cut and definitely not predictable despite appearing to show all its cards in the title. Anthony Quinn is great as always and even manages to evoke sympathy for his character at times. Costner's character is very similar to Richard Gere's in Breathless, a bit of a nasty sort, but kinda cool. Madeleine Stowe puts in probably her finest performance too. If you're looking for a film that doesn't tick all the do's and don'ts of a Hollywood mainstream movie then this could well be up your street.

Superb movie by Tony Scott!, 19 Mar 2004
Although nobody really knows this movie, it is another great piece of film done by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide, Spy Game), and it is absolutely worth buying. I do not understand why there is no Code2-version available, but perhaps, one day there will. If you are looking for a mediterranian, suspenseful, cool and haunting movie, buy this one for sure!

Almost a great movie, 25 Jun 2008
This film was both a critical and commercial failure. The production was not a pleasant one for Tony (Top GUn) Scott the director, as he was denied final cut in post-production, being re-cut at the insistence of producer Ray Stark. This maybe explains why i think it is a great movie until the last third of the picture.
Handsomely shot in a Mexico of golden dawns and tawny candlelight, Revenge is an unlikely thriller of macho passions focusing on the torrid sensuality of the Madaleine Stowe character. She is married to the rich and powerful local mobster Tibey (Quinn); and when Cochran (Costner) turns up for a holiday, things fall apart.....in more ways then one.
Tibey finds out about the illicit affair, and in a scene of almost unwatchable viciousness, stops just short of killing them.
I expected the movie to continue at this great pace, but just then at the half way point it lost all momentum and became tragic through a combination of poor script and a disastrous story line (What exactly happened to Madaleine Stowe's character in the convent at the end?).
On a plus side Kevin Costner was actually quite good in this movie. He gives a fair performance here, playing the kind of character that suits him. Madeleine Stowe brings a surprising amount of sensuality to her character rather than looking like a doll with no thoughts - must be her big round eyes that give me that impressions in her other films - and she's got the Mexican accent pretty well. Anthony Quinn as the mafia lord is powerful, he never goes over-the-top, never needs to force anything, he is natural, we can feel his vulnerability but also his stronger side and charisma such a character would need.
It all started off so well, and then it just bombed. Shame. Terrible waste of talent and terrible waste of a great movie (almost).
"You're a crazy sonofabitch, Cochran, but we're with you"
