Review

# 'Concrete and at the same time mysterious, like prose poems or modern folk tales.' Norman Shrapnel, The Guardian # 'Often defies reality with complete success an original and charming view of the world.' J.G. Farrell # 'He has such a lovely touch: a born writer- he can't be dull.' Maurice Wiggin, The Sunday Times # 'The most extraordinary literary discovery of the year for me was a young San Francisco writer, Richard Brautigan.' Desmond Morris, The Observer # 'One of the last of the beat generation, Brautigan's frequently autobiographical work [contains strikingly poignant childhood memories and even the occasional foray into magic realism - quite wonderful.' The Times # 'The verbal humour and zany charm of the book remain quite irresistible.' Daily Telegraph # 'A collection of what the Americans call short shorts, or sudden fiction, by a mster of the art. Poignant and surreal and laugh- out-loud funny.' Alan Spence, The Scotsman # 'Brautigan gets you drunk on similes, knocks you out with exquisite turns of phrase and leaves you with an ending that hits the entire novel out of the ballpark - Amazing.' Uncut # 'His writing manages to conjure up a feeling of relaxation and well-being, somehow existing in our reality without being touched by it - Easy to fall into and over far too soon. After reading this you'll feel like you've been on holiday with a friend.' Time Out # 'Pleases like the fresh air of the ocean.' The Times # 'Charming ... the stories have memorable or beautifully handled moments of observation.' London Review of Books

Product Description

First published in 1971, "Revenge of the Lawn" is Richard Brautigan in miniature and contains no fewer than 62 ultra-short stories set mainly in Tacoma, Washington (where the author grew up) and in the flower-powered San Francisco of the late fifties and early sixties. In their compacted form, which ranges from the murderously short "The Scarlatti Tilt" to one-page wonders like the sexually poignant poetry of "An Unlimited Supply of 35 Millimetre Film", Brautigan's stories take us into a world where his fleeting glimpses of everyday strangeness leave stories and characters resonating in our heads long after they're gone. "Revenge of the Lawn" is Brautigan's only collection of short fiction and is generally regarded as the most autobiographical of his published work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snap shots of his earlier days., 20 Dec 2006
By Douglas Traill (Edinburgh, Scotland.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A collection of stories that are snap shots of life in America as seen by Richard Brautigan.
Ranging from childhood in Tacoma, through to California in the 60's.
His ability to squeeze a rich and vivid story into as little as a single page is incredible, and possibly made more meaningful as he is writing about his own life and experiences.
A must have Brautigan.
