Sparkle Hayter considers herself a mystery writer, and while there is a mystery at the heart of Revenge of the Cootie Girls (a reference to the unpopular kids in junior school), it's often fun to ignore that fact. Taking place over a long Halloween night, Hayter's third book delves deeper into the life, loves, friends and career choices of Robin Hudson--a TV reporter-turned-producer with an unhealthy interest in murders, a great love for practical jokes, and a modern woman's struggle to grow up without turning into too much of an adult. Returning from a conference, Hudson is looking forward to a short night out with the girls and a romantic weekend. That wouldn't make for much of a mystery, so Hayter starts mucking about: first Hudson's intern fails to show up, though it looks like she might have found something more interesting to keep her occupied. Then what looks to be an elaborate PR stunt, centred around Hudson, starts to get a little too personal; a strangely familiar dead body shows up and Halloween shapes up into a night for more than a little trick-or-treating. Quickly paced, Hudson's--er, Hayter's- -romp through New York City is a witty, enjoyable slice of modern life, as heavy with pop-culture references as it is with some surprisingly straightforward insights into the nature of romance, friendship and maturity. Though the mystery turns out to be more convoluted--and ultimately, less satisfying--than it might've been, Hayter's pacing and characters are enough fun that it's of little bother. --Randy Silver

To me, the murder aspects are almost incidental to the wonderfully flawed character of Robin Hudson. I love her scrap book of bizarre deaths and the complexities of her ridiculous job. I like the fact that she swings perilously between vamp and hysterical paranoiac. She is a wonderful character. If I was a man I'd go out with her!

A well written and fast paced book, has Robin as her own boss. So it seems resonable that this time it is her intern that is in trouble. Robin has almost left behind her arsenal of weapons and poison ivy, but please keep them coming they always please. More kitch than crime and more a comedy than a thriller.

Very funny, very unusual, very entertaining! The mystery is secondary to the plot but I did not mind one bit. Refreshing wit and lively characters make this a book you should pick up and read.

Okay, but not as good as earlier ones

Books like this are hard to rate. While it wasn't bad, it wasn't as good as Ms. Hayter's first Robin Hudson mystery, "What's a Girl Gotta Do?" Yes, there were moments of humor, some really good, but all too often I found myself wondering just what in the world was going on. The first part of the story moved right along and was on par with Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum" series. But then I found myself distracted by lengthy narrations into the history of the Cootie Girls and I lost the train of the plot.
Although the story line was one of revenge, I wasn't quite sure against whom. Was Robin the target, or just a pawn in a bigger plot? And, why? By the time I reached the end, my head was spinning and I was worn out from the convolutions the story took to try and figure it all out. I didn't feel the secondary characters added enough substance to the story, none of them evoked much sympathy from me, and seemed to be included just so Robin would have someone to talk to.
While "Revenge of the Cootie Girls" didn't entertain me as did "What's a Girl Gotta Do?" it wasn't a bad book and did provide a couple night's worth of nice reading. I just hope that Ms.Hayter's other Robin Hudson stories will provide me with greater reading delights.

Not as funny as the first two books, but funny nonetheless!

Crazy hijinks galore. Sparkle really knows how to create some wacky characters. This book wasn't as light as the first two and seemed somewhat dark as you began to see that what had happened with her good friend in the past had a totally different meaning when viewed now. You get to see how she developed her strong personality and have a better understanding of who she is and why. I look forward to the next Robin Hudson mystery.
