Product Description

The Gloster Meteor was the first jet powered fighter aircraft to enter service with the RAF. From July 1944 the first Meteor Squadron flew sorties against the V1's. The improved F4 model first flew in 1945 and was delivered to RAF Squadrons from 1948 onwards. Many other countries also ordered the F4. The Meteor could achieve a maximum speed of 941 km/h (585 mph).

The Gloster Meteor was the RAF's first operational jet fighter (pipped at the post by the dashed Jerries and their Me262 - a typical, shabby Nazi trick), entering service with the RAF in July 1944. It served with 616 Squadron combating the V2 flying bomb, but never achieved much as a true fighter due to the Allies' fear that an airframe might be shot down and salvaged by the Luftwaffe. Nevertheless, the design saw extensive use by many air forces after the war, notably with the RAAF during the Korean War and on both sides (Israeli and Egyptian air forces) during the Suez Crisis.

Whenever I open a Revell kit, I am led to reflect on just how good they are. Mention "plastic model aeroplane" and most people will immediately think of Airfix, and I'll admit that there's something about Revell's blue and yellow livery that looks a little... down-market? But really, for quality, affordability AND diversity, it's very hard to beat the Germans and this kit is a case in point.

Revell are certainly to be applauded for the subject - early RAF fighters are not an obvious choice for a German company and the only alternatives are produced by the likes of Dragon or Cyber Hobby at more than twice the price.

As for quality? Yes it's a new tooling so there should be no excuse for producing a bad kit (should there, Airfix?) but Revell really have excelled here. This is a gorgeously moulded model and I suspect Hasegawa would be happy to charge you £30 for something similar. Exquisitely engraved panel lines and delicate mouldings and the canopy (so often a let-down) is literally a joy to behold.

I bought this as a gift for someone who flew the Meteor for the RAF back in the 1950s. I was obviously hoping that this kit was accurate enough to impress him, and at least similar to (if not exactly the same as) the one he flew back in the day.

I needn't have worried - he was obviously very impressed as soon as he opened the box. The quality of the plastic moulding is very high, and they supply a selection of decals so you can choose which livery to apply. The metallic silver with red stripes finish (pictured) is the one he remembers, so this is perfect. He even said "this is no Airfix" with a big smile - clearly Revell are a level above in terms of quality and finish.

He hasn't built any model kits for a few years now, but this has injected some enthusiasm back into him and he has already started working on it. As far as I'm concerned, this couldn't be any better. Highly recommended!

This is a very nice model of the Meeor Mark 4 and well worth purchasing. It has a unusual set of markings, and goes together well.

Model kit as expected. Excellent representation of the aircraft. The Meteor was the first jet aircraft I saw at close quarters. A blast from the past.

Until the release of this super kit from Revell the only way for a modeller to produce an accurate 1/72 scale model of the Meteor was to take the old Frog kit ( or the Novo kit produced in the old Soviet Union from Frog moulds) and incorporate details produced by the specialist manufacturer Aeroclub . Those days are now gone . This Revell kit incorporates all the detail the experienced modeller would previously strive hard to achieve and is a real pleasure to build . The nine unbuilt Frog and Novo kits of the Mk.4 Meteor that sit in my loft will soon find themselves being sold into the collectors market !!!
