Product Description

Product Description

The American Big Boys are some of the longest and largest steam locomotives ever built anywhere in the world. During the late thirties Union Pacific often used auxiliary engines to haul trains from Ogden, Utah up a steep pass to Wasatch. U.P. wished to simplify this system and instructed their own development department to design a new locomotive capable of hauling a 3,600 ton train (max 4,200 tons) up the steep pass.

The 25 Big Boy locomotives were built in 2 groups. The first group, called the Class 1, was built from 1941. The second, Class 2, was built in 1944. The last goods train was hauled by a Big Boy loco in July 1959. Most Big Boys were retired from service in 1961.

I enjoyed putting this model together, well mostly, and considering it's the first kit I've assembled in over thirty years I think I did a decent job! It took me about six hours, and wasn't a bad way to spend a lazy Sunday. There were occasional annoying incidents, such as when I encountered holes not large enough for the posts they were intended for, but I got by thanks to heating a paper clip with a lighter to burn through the plastic. Also, a painting guide would have been useful as my kit didn't come with one. I may just leave it black. All in all, though, a good kit and one which has made me quite keen to make more. No idea where I would store them, though...

This is the first steam loco kit I have put together for about 50 years. It was quite a nice way to spend Christmas but it was easy to break one small piece when putting one of the steam pipes on. Actually putting the three steam pipes on so that they connect properly with the front engine unit is very tricky. The model seems to lack the finer points of the valve gear such as the combination levers and I can find no mention in the instructions of where to put part 10 which seems to be the air pumps. Otherwise the model went together quite nicely.

The fact it is HO rather than 00 makes no difference - it's a super model - just need to find a way to motorise it!

I may just have been stupid (it's not unheard of) but I hadn't realised that this model had to be built up and painted etc. I bought it as a bit of joke stocking-filler for my train obsessed husband and got it at a very discounted price so I wasn't too upset. He may even get himself a new hobby and make the Big Boy up at some point!

HI ALL: I saw this item and found an error in the photo's,the listing is for an ho big boy. The photo's show 1 big boy # 4006 and 2 DM&IR units, the dm&ir ones were 2-8-8-4 and the big boys were 4-8-8-4 . Just a bit of info on them, also for fun info 8 big boy's are still around in usa and 3 DM&IR ones.
The massive Yellowstone type 2-8-8-4 locomotives operated by the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range railroad in Minnesota.

Good value at less than £10. Instructions for assembly had a small error and the detail items could be improved. Good value for money.
