The Cobalt Heresy: Book I of IV

On a distant world, across the vast river of time, the Journeyman High Wizard known at Jezran 'Cobalt' Wiegraf finds himself ensnared within a web of politics, intrigue, mystery, and lies - not the least of which has to do with his true identity, which he has hidden from everyone including his new Master.

Wanting nothing but to escape an oppressive Imperial regime which holds the entire world in its iron fist, Jezran's attempted exodus from the Imperial City will have unintended detours for the young wizard and his entourage.

Surrounding by 'allies' like Aemir the Desert Knight, Dancer the Half-Man, and Pi'Vari, House Wiegraf's Herald, he finds himself wondering if he can truly trust any of them...but he also knows it will be impossible to survive without their help.

Before long he finds himself face-to-face with an enemy seemingly plucked from the depths of his worst nightmares, and it will take every possible resource at his disposal to survive each deadly encounter with this dark, implacable foe.

As the noose tightens around him and the paths of escape are cut off one by one, the Journeyman High Wizard will be confronted with a revelation which will set in motion a sequence of increasingly dangerous events - events which antiquity may one day come to know as:

The Cobalt Heresy

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start to a new series! 8 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a rather curious blend of sci-fi and magic, it has a rather curious magic system which makes it rather more rather more interesting (along with the characters) than the usual man transported from earth or his soul in this case to a new body where magic is very real. The author has managed to give his own style to a plot piece that has been done a lot in fantasy but the way he went about writing it was rather refreshing and I very much recommend it to other readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revelation (Seeds of Humanity: The Cobalt Heresy Book 1) 16 Jun. 2014

Very well-written, few typos/grammatical errors
Story quite gripping and entertaining, with unexpected twists and turns
Enjoyable main protagonist
Fusion of modern world/fantasy world well-done
Length appropriate, did not feel too long or too short
Cliffhanger ending, with apparently 3 more books to go in the series (next one due in a couple weeks?)

Flashbacks somewhat disjointing at times
Background story could be enfleshed a bit more
Not really a con, but where is the rest of the series :(

Mr. Wachter's foray into fantasy is quite titillating. While I don't wish to compare the brothers, I find Caleb's writing to be more "gritty" and mature, which may be a good thing for some people and not as good for others.

Regardless, I recommend this book highly to anyone who is interested in a refreshing take on fantasy and you can't go wrong at less than a buck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a Good new Writer 19 Jun. 2014

I can nitpick on the few things that were not perfect or I did not like. But I just cannot be bothered.

And you know why? Well because the Pros outweigh the cons by alot.

The main pro, that for readers should be our main priority, is that.... the story and the main char are darn interesting and story telling really interesting. And oh for Grammer Nazi(s), the book is well written.

Normal I do not like first person POV, as there are many ways to do it wrong, but Caleb pulls it off and I really enjoyed getting into the main protagonist's head.

This is a good new author and has many interesting ideas and writes really well. He can be much better and that is because the foundations are there (I feel).

If you want to read a more polished book by him. Search for "No Middle Ground (Spineward Sectors: Middleton's Pride)", it a more polished book. Same great story telling just more polished.

Lastly FYI: people die, so if you like your heroes being immortal, well you are warned. For others like me that do not mind people dying while being heroes, then buy the book and enjoy. :D

PS: Normally would give this only a 4, as I believe only OMG EPIC books should get a 5. But Caleb is really a promising new author that I feel other fantasy / scifi readers should pick up his books and enjoy.
4.0 out of 5 stars A good read. 10 Sept. 2014

The not so unusual boy from Earth in a magical world plot done well. Although it made for some confusion I did like that the story started well into the characters life on the new world. The magical patent/licensing system was clever as well.

Nice fantasy story line. Lots of action and adventure...

Only con is the time line of the story. The author does a rather poor job explaining what happened in the past before the story line.
