Product Description

It’s hell being a vicar…

Meet The Rev. Adam Smallbone. He’s a Church of England Vicar, newly promoted from a sleepy rural parish to the busy, inner-city world of St Saviour’s in Hackney, East London. It’s a world he has no experience of. And it shows. It really shows.

Rev. is an authentic--albeit highly comic--portrait of the life of a modern, inner-city vicar. Heavily researched and supported by anecdotes from a number of working city vicars and church insiders it lifts the lid on how the modern church actually functions, and what life is really like in a dog collar.

Adam Smallbone. He's a Church of England vicar, newly promoted from a sleepy rural parish to the busy, inner-city world of St Saviour's in Hackney, East London. It's a world he has no experience of. And it shows. It really shows. Alex - Adam's long-suffering wife - does her best to support him, but she's got her own career as a solicitor to worry about. And she is no-one's idea of a conventional vicar's wife. Anybody can and does come into St Saviour's - from scheming MPs trying to educate their children on the cheap to Colin, a heavy drinking, unemployable lost soul... Rev. is an authentic, albeit highly comic, portrait of the life of a modern, inner-city vicar. 5.0 out of 5 stars What it's really like... 17 Aug 2010
By D'Arcy
Format:DVD
This is an excellent series, very well written and with thorough research into the world of the Church of England vicar. Whether you are involved in the Church or not, I think we can all identify with playing the nice guy and trying to please everyone, usually unsuccessfully. We can all identify with the self doubt.

Rev made me laugh and cry. As a vicar's wife I have seen pretty much everything that happens in this series. I think that is what impressed me the most. I love the Vicar of Dibley and it has it's poignant moments, but this is so much more reflective of the real thing.

The most moving part of the whole series was the end of the last episode - here I am flawed and doubtful and yet I do what I'm called to do.

I can't recommend this series enough. It's not all about religion and it goes some way to dispel the myth of pointless insipid vicars like those you see on other TV programmes. And for those of us who love the Thorn Birds there is that dashing Archdemon, sorry, Archdeacon!!

Funny and moving, I hope there will be another series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 19 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
This series was hilarious and I am looking forward to being able to buy the DVD.

Growing up as a Vicar's son, I was able to spot just how usual so many of the scenarios were - even if the characters weren't exactly the same :-)

<shameless plug> If you liked this series, you'll probably enjoy this Owl Among the Ruins - yes my Dad wrote it but I honestly found it a compelling read and loved every minute. Don't believe me? Take a look at the reviews on the page! And don't be shocked that Vicar's know all the swear words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Dry Glum Comedy 7 Nov 2011
By Hagrid's Umbrella VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Tom Hollander (excellent in this and the thrid Pirates of the Caribbean film) plays the lead as a Vicar having just joined a tough London inner city church from an apparently cushy country church. He's a small and difficult congregation and does his best to stand up for his faith and the people but things don't always go to plan. He somewhat put upon, world weary, glum and not without minor temptation.

There's only a handful of recurring characters to work with but they go together very well to produce some excellent results. There the slimey Archdeacon (played superbly by Simon McBurney), Rev's wife Alex who tries to both be supportive but not too involved, Miles Jupp the Curate has some excellent lines to cut to the heart of situations (if not being too helpful), Steve Evets plays an unruly member of the congregation that often causes trouble with his less than perfect actions, Ellen Thomas plays a very fussy and straight talking member of the congregation.

The humour is very good, very dry (Steve Coogan ish) and you have to be a bit patient but for me its definitely worth it.

I think my favourite episode was when the archdeacon encourages him to make more money and let a evangelical preacher use the church. Rev clearly despises him and his approach and is caught with the dilemma of the archdeacons instructions, his usual polite and humble demeanour and his building irritation with these people.

Can't wait for Series 2.
