Criminally unavailable in the UK, the latest album by Winnipeg's The Weakerthans is one of those records that makes the world a measurably better place. Full of wit, pathos and joyous abandon, it should be owned by anyone with even a passing interest in great music.

From the power-chord exuberance of 'Civil Twilight' and 'Tournament of Hearts' to the romanticism of 'Sun In An Empty Room' and the heart-rending poignance of 'Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure' and 'Utilities', this develops many of the sonic pleasures found on their 2003 masterwork 'Reconstruction Site'. If it falls short, this is only testament to the crowning achievement of that album. An effort at diversity is evident, not only musically but also in John K. Samson's lyrical preeminence, and this makes 'Reunion Tour' slightly more disjointed, although not in any displeasing way.

A record that will fill you with joy and energy and humanity all your days. Absolutely essential.
