Biography

Black Sabbath has been so influential in the development of heavy metal rock music as to be a defining force in the style. The group took the blues-rock sound of late '60s acts like Cream, Blue Cheer, and Vanilla Fudge to its logical conclusion, slowing the tempo, accentuating the bass, and emphasizing screaming guitar solos and howled vocals full of lyrics expressing mental anguish and ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Epic 14 Oct 2003
By Docendo Discimus TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Well, it's an Epic release, anyway.
"Reunion" is as close to an official live album as the band has had in their 34-year career. 1980's "Live At Last" was released without their permission, and 1982's "Live Evil" featured then-singer Ronnie James Dio.
But here it is, finally, and "Reunion" does not disappoint. Culled from a series of concerts in their native Birmingham in December 1997, it includes their most enduring classics ("Black Sabbath", "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "Iron Man").
And Sabbath manages to avoid the most common pitfall of live recordings: speeding up the songs. This patience is crucial, since such staples as "Sweet Leaf", "Black Sabbath," and "Snowblind" owe much of their unique personality and somber atmospherics to the band's trademark snail's pace.
I wouldn't have put "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" on right after "War Pigs" (it becomes very obvious that "Wall" is just "Pigs" with a slightly altered melody and a different arrangement).
And Ozzy Osbourne's vocals aren't quite as strong as the were 30 years ago (he can't hit the high notes on "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"). But he can still carry a tune, something which he couldn't always 30 years ago, and guitarist Tony Iommi has lost absolutely none of his impressive chops.
Bill Ward lays down an appropriately heavy beat, one which doesn't just plod along without variation, but actually shows what a fine heavy metal drummer Ward is. And Terry "Geezer" Butler was always one of heavy metal's best and most orginal bass players.
Tony Iommi's searing lead guitar belies the fact that he lost the tips of his fingers in an accident back in the late 60s (it was that which caused him to tune down, slackening the strings enough for him to fret them without too much pain).

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Sabbath Reunited at last 8 July 2010
By Mr Blackwell TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
After years of rumours ,will they, wont they,Ozzy and the boys reunited for a couple of gigs from which this recording comes.

From the opening sirens of 'War Pigs' to the last notes of 'Paranoid',the band takes us on a time machine back through the hallowed era with classic afer classic,'Black Sabbath','Iron Man''Children Of The Grave''Sweet Leaf','Snowblind' & 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath',they're all here, while selected album cuts such as 'Electric Funeral','Spiral Architect'have the crowd begging for more.

And there is more , a stunning 'Faires Wear Boots', a visceral 'Dirty Women', a jaw dropping 'Into The Void' and a breath taking 'Orchid/Lord of this World' with 'N.I.B' & 'Behind The Wall Of Sleep' making up the numbers.Interestingly the booklet has a set list which shows 'The Wizard' and 'Symptom of the Universe',sadly nether made the album, they would have been the icing on the cake.

This is a fantastic live album and shows you what all the fuss was about, stunning band stunning songs, sadly the 2 studio tracks cannot hold a(black?)candle to the earlier output and the planned studio album never happened.

The whole set is presented in a digipak with excellent booklet and guitar pic.5 stars all the way

5.0 out of 5 stars The masters show how good they are 14 Jan 2005
Format:Audio CD
This is a great live album from the original masters of heavy metal. From the moment Ozzy utters his first "yea you f.....s" to the last note of paranoid this has class written all over it.
All the best songs from their career are here,my favorites electric funeral and fairies were boots-nice to here them loud and v heavy.
The concert is complete from their second night at the NEC Birmingham uncut and no overdubes. As a Sabbath nut this is indispensable, the only live Sabbath album you need-forget the rest.
If you are a metal fan buy this and listen to the original and best metal band ever.As a ps there are also two new songs at the end studio recordings what shows what might be if they ever record a new album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Reunion to end all Reunions 30 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
From the first second you hear that loud, War Pigs siren to the last word on Paranoid you enter a world of Sabbath. The band playing to their full pontential and Ozzy interacting with the crowd. From letting them sing every second line of War Pigs to spending 2 minutes getting the crowd to shout louder before he starts Iron Man, Ozzy brings out the real noise, life and wonder of Sabbath. This shows that Black Sabbath are a better live band than a studio band since the last two song kinda run away with themselves and drift into a world of true weirdness. All in all Reunion is a true tribute to the Sabb

I don't own many "live" albums preferring "studio" recordings of my favourite bands and then attending their concerts..... But this "Reunion" album by Black Sabbath is brilliant from start to finish, the "sound" is great and captures the mood and the atmosphere of those 1997 Birmingham N.E.C shows perfectly.
All the Sabbath favourites are here, "War Pigs", "Snowblind",
"Children of the Grave", "Paranoid and "Black Sabbath"...but there are some great suprises too, check out "Behind the Wall of Sleep", "Spiral Architect","Into the Void" and "Dirty Women".
The famous "Sabbath sound" comes across so well on this album it is easy to see why they "influenced" so many of todays'Metal Bands.
"Ozzy" Ozbournes' voice is crisp and full of bite, and the Band play so well their "Legendary" status in Rock music is left shining and untainted....Buy it!! Listen to it in one session, and hear why they became arguably Englands' finest purveyors of "Metal"!!
If you only ever buy one "Live" Rock album for your collection this is the one to buy, capturing Rock as it should be heard,
"Loud & Proud, and in your Face!!"
REUNION - BLACK SABBATH comes highly recommended by a Musician and Music fanatic, Buy it now, no regrets.
