Product Description

Since forming in 1996, Solas (meaning "Llight" in Gaelic) has been widely proclaimed as the most popular, influential and exciting Celtic band to ever emerge from the United States. Even before the release of their self-titled debut, The Boston Herald trumpeted Solas as "the first truly great Irish band to arise from America" while The Irish Echo ranked Solas among "the most exciting bands anywhere in the world". Solas celebrates their 10 year anniversary with this spectacular concert CD/DVD collection that features all current and past members. Filmed and recorded in Philadelphia, PA on September 13th, 2005, the collection features a 17 track audio CD as well as a 1 hour, 45 minute DVD of the reunion concert in stereo and 5:1 surround sound mix. Also included are interviews, an extensive photo gallery of individual and band photos and behind the scene views of the rehearsals.

Back in 2002 I did one of those impulse purchases when you buy a CD on the strength of a comment on the promotional sticker on the front. The album was Edge Of Silence by Solas. Actually it wasn't completely on impulse. I have one of those Putamayo world music compilations from '98 called Celtic Tides, and one of my favourite tracks on that was Maid on the Shore by Solas. Edge of Silence is a brilliant mix of contemporary and traditional Irish music, by an American/Irish band based in Philadelphia. I've since tracked back through their back catalogue and bought everything since. Earlier this year they released Reunion, to celebrate being around for 10 years. The CD is beautifully recorded live, and is fantastic value, because it comes with the DVD of the reunion concert.

They assembled all of the musicians that have ever played with the band, including their first singer Karen Casey, and their current singer Dierdre Scanlan. The CD has 17 songs, and the DVD 25, tracking through the history of their output. Some songs are done with the original line ups, and others mix the personnel, or have everyone, and some guests, playing together. The band is fronted by multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan, and violinist Winifred Horan who have remained constant throughout the changes, and create the signature of the Solas sound. Some of the traditional material is hundreds of years old, but with their arrangements, and fantastic musicianship it all sounds so fresh. Their own songs and more recent material is mixed in, and there is a fine balance between ballads and songs, and Irish jigs and reels. Particular favourites include Silver Dagger, Black Annis, Who's in the What Now... oh, actually I'm about to list all 17 songs.

On first listen this album really didn't seem to hit the spot, but I think it's a grower, because after a few listens I liked it more and more.
I've not heard of the group before, but saw that they were playing locally in the UK and judging by the list of instruments shown in the programme, thought they would be my cup of tea.
I think I tend to judge all folk type bands by 'Show of Hands' standards, so of course they have a lot to live up to straight away, but Solas are definitely more of Irish influence in their music, so i can't make a direct comparison.
A bonus is the DVD - haven't viewed this yet, so can't comment on the content.
My favourite number is 'On a sea of Fleurs de Lys' and I enjoyed a lot of the other upbeat tunes. Some of the slower numbers really don't appeal, but overall - not a bad album.

Incredible musicians and what a price for a DVD/CD 25 Sep 2006
By Lilting Banshee - Published on Amazon.com

You get more than 2 hours of DVD concert footage--one great tune or song after another. Wow. I'm not kidding. Wow. Driving duo guitars on one tune, then Karan Casey singing a song then the whole band rocking out on some incredible set arranged the Solas way. You really have to hear this to believe it. This is Irish music stretched into a Solas groove. There are too many highlights to name them all: 4 part female harmony on Reasonland; John Doyle rocking out; Seamus Egan playing banjo, flute, guitar; Winnifred Horan showing fiddle virtuosity on ripping jigs and reels, then making you weep on some slow tune. And the vocals of one breathtaking vocalist after another. Solas isn't just straight ahead Irish music played at breathtaking speed . . .they hit a groove and explore the territory; they cover all sorts of stuff besides Irish: Darkness Darkness by Jessie Colin Young (remember the Youngbloods?); Cold Rain and Snow (the Grateful Dead covered this trad tune on their first studio album in 1967 or something) and everything gets the Solas treatment and it works beautifully. So watch the incredible concert DVD, then pop the CD in your car or stereo or whatever it is you listen to and you will be amazed. And to think I wasn't much of a Solas fan before I saw/heard this reunion set.

The audio/video value of the century! 9 May 2006

Simply put, a terrific CD. If you are a Solas fan you will recognize much of the music, but it is performed here with a difference. It's like listening to Solas for the first time all over again! The DVD is equally stunning. Very professionally done, and the next best thing to being there. This was a very rare event, and I thank everyone at Solas for putting this together.

excellent CD and DVD 9 May 2006
By Cathy Nobil - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Great music from a fantastic band. The fact that all of the members, both new and old were at the concert only enhances the music. I actually attended the recording of the DVD and it was a wonderful night of music. The musicians were really on and it comes across on both of the recordings. Whether you are new to Solas or an old fan, you will find Reunion a great listen!

The Best of All the Solas' 17 Feb 2007
By David Evans - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This CD/DVD is a joyful reunion of the current Solas members with all (?) of the past members, like Karen Casey. They sound (and look, on the DVD) like they are really having fun, playing together once more. If you know Solas, this is a memento to listen to over and over. If you don't know them, it's a fine way to start!
