Product Description

Return to Oz, details the experiences of a young pom and the way he adapts to his new life style `Down-Under'; his untimely return to the UK, and how as a mature adult, he makes his long awaited voyage of re-discovery ! Synopsis'It made me laugh, it nearly made me cry and it definitely made me want to catch the next plane for Oz'. Peter Knight. 'If you only ever read one book about Australia - make it this one. John Brown has that rare gift of combining incisive wit with just enough pathos. I felt as though I was carrying his luggage'. David Carlisle C4U Review.

From the Author

As a wide-eyed sixteen year old about to start college, my
life and future were thrown into turmoil by the un-characteristic actions
of my normally safe thinking father, who had suddenly become hell-bent on
dragging his family to the other side of the world - Australia, a land of
constant sunshine, seemingly endless horizons, tanned nubile females,
crystal white sands and rolling surf, a land where anything and everything
seemed possible, a place that was to change my outlook on life for ever.

Having settled into my new life with great relish, and fast approaching the
end of our third year in Oz, my mother finally insisted the family return
to the U.K. (much to my father's consternation). What I, nor anybody else
could have foreseen, was the length of time that was to pass before my wish
to return became a reality.

All of life's events had in a strange way led me full circle to this
eventuality, and on a bright summer's morning, I stood alone looking out
across the glorious blue waters of Sydney Harbour.

The sun was still as bright, the sky as blue, and the shimmering heat haze
as hypnotic as ever. Like beta particles, a thousand memories flooded my
jet-lagged brain as I drank in the spectacle of this watery idyll - I was
back in Oz and even I could hardly believe it, so with my notebook in hand,
a spring in my step, and a smile as wide as the Harbour Bridge - I set off
to re-discover OZ.

For those looking for an alternative to Bill Bryson's 'Down Under' travel writing, I can recommend John Brown's 'Return To Oz'.

John went to Australia originally in the 60's, his parents joined the '£10 pom' scheme, then came back to the UK when he was in his late teens. The book is about his recent return to Oz, and seeing places he'd seen from his youth and how they'd changed.

It only focuses on a few major places (Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney), but it comments on some suburban areas, which I found useful as I'm researching where in Sydney to move to.

It's a fairly short read, but entertaining and informative. You feel you know a little more about Australia after you've read it. Recommended.

Wonderful read 3 Dec 2006

This book made me lots of things!

Happy, it made me laugh and smile a lot. It made me sad in some places, but that happy sort of sad. It made me read from the first page to the last. It had the draw of a who-dun-it and I needed to know how it all turned out. It also made me wish that my family had emigrated to a place with more opportunity for a young lad. C'est la vie!

I would love to see more from this author, please.

Disappointed 19 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
I have been trying to get hold of this book for ages and unfortunately was really disappointed (sorry!).

The book is about how John went to Australia with his parents back in the 60's on the £10 pom scheme, only to return to the UK after a couple of years because his mother was homesick. Whilst the book doesnt talk about his return to the UK it does give a good description of 3 cities and their surrounding areas (Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney) in the 60's and how they had changed upon his return visit some 20 years later.

I have travelled to all 3 cities and surrounding areas John describes, especially Adelaide and Sydney spending 2-3 months in each place so I found the book interesting from this perspective. There were numerous times I thought a story was going to unravel and add some depth only to become disappointed it didnt go anyway. The book is merely a diary of places he visited rather than a fun novel which is what I was expecting.
