Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Along with Kruder and Dorfmeister, IG Culture and Freerange's Jamie O'Dell, Ian Simmonds is one of very few producers to have successfully breached the chasm that has traditionally separated DJ culture from more tangible, organic material. A musician first and foremost he made his mark in the early 1990s as a founding member of influential acid jazz band The Sandals before an imploding deal with London Records forced him to go it alone and although early hard-to-find twelves as Juryman found acclaim among those that know, it was the release of The Hill longplayer that provided the catalyst for more widespread attention. While last years outing was made distinctive through its use of vocals from the likes of Alison Goldfrapp and Roger Robinson, his own moniker has remained reserved for solo material with this latest album expanding upon the slippery musical style which defined 1999's Last States of Nature. Odd time signatures and unusual programming abound, though the shape shifting melodics are prevented from straying too far by stoical rhythm sections--the electronic elements warmed through by occasional acoustic touches. Standouts include "Alvin's Blues" where the percussion finds itself caught in bleary-eyed filters and the not-quite-house grooves, which underpin the wandering sounds of "The Mantra." Music for more adventurous lounges. - Kingsley Marshall

5.0 out of 5 stars dark acid jazz and lounge fussion 25 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Ian Simmons' "Return to X" has a smooth texture to it, with superb percussion found in "the Mantra" and "Alvins Blues", in my opinion the stand out tracks. there is a hint of cinematic orchestra in the less brooding tracks and I would make a comparrison with St. Germain "Tourist", although Return to X never gets uplifting to house beats. This album has a feel of true work to it and slides together with the greatest of ease but somehow feels complex at the same time.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTRAGEOUS 28 Mar 2001
By K. Hunter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I bought this cd after reading a review of it in TimeOut. I had no idea what to expect. It has been in my player ever since. I cannot describe the sound. Simmonds is a new breed of downtempo artist, who has to have some classic backgroud. His melodies and arrangements are fantastic. Get his first cd as well and you can the evolution of this major talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars a soft mystery 18 Jan 2002
By Annika - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
There is defintely something of a sort of soft mystery to the entire cd, and I love it. I must say, this is a cd that I do not turn to at every hour, all hours of the day (except for the first few weeks I had it). I have reached a point when I decide, yes, now I will listen to return to x. And I enjoy every split second of it. There is a subtlety and intensity to Simmonds music. I would say that if you find yourself liking it rather quickly in the beginning, you will find yourself craving it after heard once through.

My favorite...'NO BAMBOO', a very sexy, moody piece that travels with a decided seductiveness. You absloutely want to follow it, move with it.

The cover photos are what attracted me first, having not heard of Ian Simmonds when I picked up the cd. Swift, mildly obscure black and white images. The music follows a similar sort of track.

I really enjoy Return to X. And even if you do not come to love it, it is a rare bit to add to any collection you have, as well as what I classify as a 'turn on' cd. It will definitely turn on the interest of people you play for (especially those interested in anything linked to the genre). Folks either like it or not. But it will stimulate something, at the very least dialogue....and perhaps as much as hours of repeat enjoyment. (though it still manages to not sound quite the same way twice).

3.0 out of 5 stars heinously dry 30 May 2001
By "mr_gibbon" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
a lot of this album sounds like second-rate electro jazz; it seems quite uninspired, and more than just a little bland. the songs are trance-inducing, but not in a good way: i was sent into a kind of dense, stupid trance. this cd is relaxing, but the repetition gets to be a little overt: just a warning. i'll turn to Boards or the Squarepusher for true innovation.
