I am among the minority of Doctor Who fans that love the original Web Planet.

This audio story creates a somewhat different atmosphere to the original with its ethereal celestial desert and acid pools. Instead, we have a strange forest landscape, though the noise of Zarbu evokes the original. Both stories have a dreamy feel.

The story is interesting enough, though oen struggles to get one's head around the concept revealed at the story's conclusion.

I think the two Menoptera voices ought to sound just a little bit more alien than they do.

Probably the best part of this audio is the amazing musical score, which is included as an isolated music track at the end of the CD.

This is one of my favourite Doctor Who stories from Big Finish. Another thrilling Doctor Who adventure with the Doctor and Nyssa. This time, the TARDIS duo visit the planet Vortis in 'Return to the Web Planet'. Released in December 2007, it was a subscriber's special from Big Finish as a Christmas special. I found this is a very exciting, engaging and enjoyable story to listen to, and it really felt like a proper Christmas special to me.

'Return to the Web Planet' is actually a sequel to the 1965 TV story with William Hartnell called 'The Web Planet'. I have to say I did enjoy 'The Web Planet' very much, but I had found it rather slow and it took some time to understand the story, the creatures and the setting. 'Return to the Web Planet' is completely different to that, as it's a much faster paced story and is really engaging. The writer of this story Daniel O'Mahoney has done a remarkable job in recreating Vortis with remarkable storytelling and witty dialogue.

The sound design and music of this story is quite extraordinary as you feel you actually are on Vortis. They got the sound effect of the Zarbi absolutely right and they sound much more feral and can move very fast when running compared to what they did in the TV story.

I love the opening sequence where Nyssa and the Doctor are just having a walk exploring the planet after having landed on the planet in the TARDIS. The Doctor reminisces on his previous visit to Vortis and Nyssa comments how lovely the planet is and how it reminds her of home since there are now forests growing. Forests! They didn't have them in the TV story.
