After the success of last year's Soul City [+Digital booklet] comes a sequel. In this edition the timescale moves to focus on the mid/late 70's period and again crams on many great songs, pretty much all of them spending time in the British pop charts.

The biggest challenge for the compilers here is that dreaded beast Disco. By 1975 the sound of dance music was beginning to morph into what soon would become one of the defining genres of the decade. Disco's roots can be found in both the first edition of this compilation and also throughout this. The real success of this set is how neatly it sidesteps being a full blown Disco album. Here the music is firmly rooted in the soulful end of proceedings.

There are many tracks here which could be classed as having had a major influence on the way the disco movement progressed but there is barely a hint of mirrorball, it's all to soulful for that. A good example of this is the choice of The Jackson's earliest post-Motown hit "Show Me The Way To Go" and no sign of "Blame It On The Boogie". There are songs here which would fit well into discos - contributions from Odyssey, Heatwave, Candi Station, Rose Royce, and The Blackbyrds, for example - but each of these has a funky and soulful edge to them which appealed equally to old soul fans who'd rather drink a pint of glitter than be seen dead in a disco.

The set tries hard to find songs not widely available on such collections but this era has been so well represented in the past that the task must have been much harder than on the first outing. Yet there are some less well represented tracks.

Most compilation albums I buy are whittled down via my music library until there only a small fraction of the original line up left, but in this case taking into account the album boasts over 50 tracks, the majority are still hanging on in there.

Along with its companion 'Soul City' this 70's soul into disco collection is a great selection of classic songs from the mid 70's. Covering a fairly wide choice of styles within the genre it really brings back the memories. Well worth the price, whoever put these two collections together certainly knew what they were doing.

This is a great CD if you like the old soul stuff - it's good value for money for a boogie & sing-along. Delivery was asap as usual with Amazon.

Anyone know if the recording of "Feel the Need In Me" by The Detroit Emeralds is the version that first charted in the UK in 1973 or the re-recorded version which charted in 1977?

A good CD with some rare tracks on it. If there's ever to be a third edition, I hope they include the 1977 top 20 hit "I Can't Get You Outta My Mind" by Yvonne Elliman.

I have bought dozens of compilation CDs over the years, some of which contain many weak songs that are only there to fill up the CD. That is not the case with this one, every track on this CD is good!
