Whilst Henri Nouwens never went away in the sense that The Prodigal Son did, Rembrandt's painting of "The Return of the Prodigal Son" was a trigger in his deepening closeness to God. By examining the three main protagonists in the story - younger son, older son, Father - and by identifying with each of them, he found himself analysing himself and his relationship to God. This painting made a deep impression on Henri and it changed his whole life by bringing him into the L'Arche community in Canada. The book is well written and should challenge all its readers to re-examine themselves and their attitudes to others. A truly remarkable book.

the story of Nouwen's inspiration from Rebrant's painting of the return of the prodigal son, seen from the viewpoints of both sons and the father. a totally awesome book - sensitively written and appealing to both Christians and non-christians alike.
