This album transcends mere reggae into realms of psychedelic beauty. These are some of Lee Perry's deepest and darkest dubs, his whole sonic array unleashed upon some beautiful and tasteful Upsetters rhythms. Opener "Dyon-Anaswa" is on an adaptation of Roy Richard's "Freedom Blues", and has some lovely female gospel chanting of foreign (or made-up, I don't know) lyrics by Aura Lewis and The Full Experience. The title track has a low-key noodly-jazz rhythm with a saxophone solo played over it, and then erupts into an abstract free-jazz-meets-Afro-beat crescendo. There's tuneful, groovy funk-reggae ("Tell Me Something Good") shimmering, ethereal, floaty jams ("Crab Yars")... even a deep stompy song with some almost heavy-metal(!) riffs ("Jah Jah Ah Natty Dread"). These almost pale into comparison though, next to "Bird In Hand". This is one of the most, hypnotic, mystical and meditational reggae songs ever, with a Sam Carty vocal which uses Hindi lyrics to a song from a 1950 Indian musical called "Milte Hi Aankhen". It's astonishing.

I have listened to this album a lot in the last eight years or so and have come to know it very well. But a word must be said about the production, or remastering of this VP CD, which some may take issue with. As with the Congos' "Heart Of The Congos" LP, this album was turned down by Island Records, who refused to release it. I don't know who owns the master-tapes, or if Lee Perry still has them, because this was definitely mastered from a vinyl copy, and I don't want it to be an unofficial bootleg. The sound is pretty shocking to be honest, not just hissy (this is not uncommon in Lee Perry productions), but rather muffled and lo-fidelity in places too. No matter, nothing can detract from the quality of this album.

Lee "Scratch" Perry's definitve statement.

Just buy it. Now. 180 gramme vinyl is an especially important format to buy it in. Dub it up! 1love
