Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Jamiroquai have soundly established themselves as a name synonymous with the summer breeze sound they've claimed as their own. Space Cowboy is no exception, as the salsa jazz-fusion buzzes wistfully and harmoniously through every track on the album. Following the path laid out in Emergency On Planet Earth, this second album catapulted the band into stardom and left front man Jay Kay dancing to songs of admiration as the first self-appointed Space Cowboy. The title track epitomises the essence of big band dance music with a funky fresh vibe of feel good energy and toe-tapping excitement. Although the album lacks any big surprises, the definitive Jamiroquai sound captures mind, body and soul, making it difficult for any music lover to ignore. --David Trueman

BBC Review

When Jason ‘Jay Kay’ Cheetham and his band appeared in 1992 as part of the acid jazz movement, they were viewed with a great deal of suspicion by the rock and soul cognoscenti. Aside from their leader’s silly hat, they – keyboard player Toby Smith, bassist Stuart Zender, drummer Derrick McKenzie and Wallis Buchanan on didgeridoo – seemed too arriviste; he was a showbiz child (his mother is comedienne Karen Kay), had bad boy credentials and a deep love for Stevie Wonder’s music. Naming his band after a combination of ‘jam session’ and the Iroquois Indians, theirs was a weird, stoned funk that sounded like some lost album from 1972.

The Return of the Space Cowboy was the 1994 follow-up to their debut, the previous year’s Emergency on Planet Earth. Q Magazine said at the time that "only Jay Kay could come up with as naff a title as The Return of the Space Cowboy and make it sound about right", and it’s true: it shouldn’t work, but it does. The whole album happens leisurely – it plays for 71 minutes (just 10 minutes shorter than Wonder’s Innervisions and Fulfillingess’ First Finale put together) with most tracks around the six-minute mark. The mellow funk of Manifest Destiny meanders before drifting off in a brass heavy coda. Morning Glory is laid back, a blissed-out joy; perfect comedown music with percussion darting from speaker to speaker. The Kids is the only time the album strays from its trippy groove, with its heavy wah-wah opening and Kay’s affirmation that "now we’re getting nasty".

Space Cowboy, Half the Man and Stillness in Time were its UK-charting singles; the album reached number two domestically and spent over half a year on the chart. More importantly, it established the group in America, and its influence was huge, with Morning Glory sampled by Missy Elliott and Manifest Destiny by Tupac Shakur. The album hasn’t really dated one bit as it paid so little attention to musical trends of the time.

Although it still leaves this reviewer with the overwhelming feeling that he’d rather be listening to Stevie Wonder or Donny Hathaway, you cannot deny how well this is all done. The Return of the Space Cowboy captures this first phase of Jamiroquai at their very best.

--Daryl Easlea

A Classic 18 Oct 2002
Format:Audio CD
I've only just started listening to Jamiroquai again recently, but as soon as I stuck this CD on, all of the good times came flooding back.

This is probably the best album Jamiroquai have produced, as there isn't a single track that I skip when I listen to it, unlike tracks such as "Supersonic" etc, which features on "Synkronized".

Every track has been masterfully produced by Jay Kay and Co, featuring some of the funkiest basslines ever laid down as well as some ultra-smooth vocals from the main man. The entire album is also complimented by some excellent synth work, which rather than stand out from the other instruments, blend in nicely.

Even though I like every track, my particular favourites are: "Just Another Story", the first track and a masterpiece of varied styles, "Mr Moon", a chilled kick-back tune, "Scam", an ultra-energetic dancefloor track and "Space Cowboy", perhaps one of the greatest songs of all time, with amazing singing and instrument/synthesizer music, pure class.

So overall, this is one of my favourite albums of all time and if you have only recently started listening to Jamiroquai then get this in!

I disagree with the detractors that claim that each Jamiroquai disc is the same as the previous one, they are undoubtedly one of the more consistant acts of recent years, and their body of work stands head and shoulders above most. This, their second album, is my personal favourite. The sound is mellow and languid, certainly Jay's least upbeat offering, yet one that repays with repeated listening. While lacking the big radio hits of his other discs, it includes the classic "Half The Man", the timeless (near)title track, the funked-up "Light Years" and, in my eyes, their best single in the 1995 UK top 10-er "Stillness in Time". If you appreciate the less-poppy side of Jamiroquai, buy this cd!

There's no coincidence that the videos to this album mostly feature fast cars. Because this one's as sleek a model as it gets, with alloy wheels and a beast of an engine.

For anyone who likes bass guitar led music, kick-ass (but also chilled) funk, or dancing wearing crazy hats, this is a must. I bought this album when it came out and it beats the rest of my Jamiroqui collection (before and after).

Standout tracks include Just Another Story, Kids, Space Cowboy and Stillness In Time. Put your stereo into sixth gear baby!
