Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

After No Doubt sold more than 10 million copies of Tragic Kingdom, riding that wave of success without toppling over must have been a daunting mission. No sweat for No Doubt. The band had toiled as unknowns with a loyal local following for a decade before that album's release, and during that time the band members were learning how to be better songwriters and musicians. The follow-up, Return Of Saturn, glides along that continuum of songcraft perfection. The band presents a cleaner, less apologist representation of their influences. They pull off some of the more difficult manoeuvres of pure reggae, ground-pounding ska, and Cars-esque New Wave. Gwen Stefani belts a powerful pout, her Mae West-meets- Siouxsie Sioux vocal bravado is the bungee cord that springs in between the band's retro tendencies and SoCal pop-punk attitude. Songs such as "Bathwater" and "Ex-Girlfriend" reveal the singer's vulnerability to being hurt or dumped on, and the band's sense of humour and exploration (albeit firmly controlled) matches the songs' sentiments. This group is growing out and tightening up, and while the rest of the ska-punk surfer-dude bands do nothing more than repeat history, No Doubt is creating it. --Beth Massa

5.0 out of 5 stars this is truly amazing! 6 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I thought "Tragic Kingdom" was brilliant, but in my opinion this is so much better. Some real rocky songs such as "bathwater"; "six feet under" and "ex-girlfriend" and some slower tracks like "marry me" and "too late". My absolute favourite is "new", to be honest there is nothing bad about that song at all! I also really love "simple kind of life". Everybody who I've made listen to this album comes away loving it and I can honestly say It's one of my favourite albums ever. I would say it's a little more soulful than "Tragic Kingdom" and not as funky as their more recent song "Hey Baby". Buy this! I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not bad? Depressing? and u call urself fans? 3 Jun 2003
Format:Audio CD
This is along with all the other No Doubt releases, a masterpiece. Personally im fond of anything fronted by a female vocalist. To go completely against other reviews...6 feet under is my favourite song and its actually quite realistic and happy...its about her birthday and celebrating the power of female generations...how can that be depressing?! Anyway, if you like all of No Doubts earlier stuff then you'll love this. Reviews are hard to trust..everyones taste is different..but if u like realisitc lyrics, catchy tunes and a cd where every track is excellent..then buy this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard Act to Follow 18 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Truly groundbreaking material from one the foremost bands in the world.Tracks like "New" and "Too Late" skillfuly play with your emotions, while "Ex-Girlfriend" and "Six Feet Under" make you want to grab your guitar and crunch along. Gwen Stefani is a sheer vocal driving force, controlling most of the tracks in a manner second to none. Dumont and Kanal know their instruments, and artfully aid Stefani in leading your mind down the rabbit hole. Can't wait for the next offering.
