There can be few bands served as well by live albums as Jefferson Airplane. It would be fair to say though that the band's early years have been under-represented......until now. 'Return To The Matrix' is chronologically, the last of a series of four concerts just released by Collectors Choice. All of these have been apparently been available unofficially and I know that that there have been concerns about the sound quality of at least one of the other shows. 'Matrix' though has been quite well recorded thus allowing the listener to concentrate on what is truly important about this little piece of history. Perhaps the most interesting thing about it is the inclusion of songs that have never (legally) been heard live before - 'Martha', 'Two Heads', 'Blues From An Airplane', 'Ice Cream Phoenix' (an engaging instrumental at this stage)and 'Share A Little Joke'. This last one resembles the single that had just been released rather than the very different and later album version. Even more familiar concert numbers like 'Someone To Love' and 'Today' feature new ideas and thrilling improvisation.

For me, this was the most creative and innovative phase of the Airplane's history. The journey from 'Takes Off' through 'Surrealistic Pillow' and 'After Bathing At Baxter' had been taken seemingly at the speed of light. And here they were now in early '68 working on the blueprints for 'Crown of Creation'...one wonders when they ever found time to pause for breath! Live popular music can rarely have been as exciting as this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic psychedelia 18 Oct 2010
By Bodhi Heeren TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This often bootlegged show is a true classic. Good sbd quality and some amazing music, the Airplane heading for the stratosphere. Great songs, inspired and improvisational playing. The magic voices of Marty Balin and Grace Slick, the thundering bass of Jack Cassidy, one of the true pioneers of the instrument. The creative lead guitar of Jorma Kaukonen, and it all kept together by the often criminally underrated rythm guitar artistry of Paul Kantner.

Everything sounding fresh and inspirational with some rarely heard live songs "Martha", "Two Heads", "Share A Little Joke". The sound of the band itself might be a little thin and they would surely go on to reach higher levels of musicianship. Still this show is a gem, and certainly on my personal top 3 of Airplane concerts.

What are you waiting for: feed your head with some genuinely mindexploring (and -exploding) psychedelia!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Bootleg 27 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
Remember hearing this set as a boot in the mid seventies.
It's in tune and running at correct tape speed [unlike the Live in Golden Gate Park set on Charly]and an excellent companion to Bless its Pointed with lots of Marty Balin well up in the soundboard mix.Recommended.
