Unlike many British soul acts who tend to serve their musicup with a polite, retro presentation, Mark Morrison's RETURN OF THE MACK squares itself in the present alongside peers like R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige. This is a spicy blend of contemporary R&B soaked in hip-hop and dancehall flavours . Various suggestive shades of sexuality provide the flow, from the Blackstreet-flavoured new-jack posturing of "Let's Get Down" to the more blatant "Horny", an electro-funk excursion that mixes in elements of Rick James, the Gap Band and Cameo's Larry Blackmon.
Elsewhere, "Get High With Me" allows Morrison to pay homage to Dr. Dre as he sings about "the chronic" over a woozy, hallucinogenic rhythm and Dre-like keyboard squeals. Mark Morrison's confident swagger coupled with his randy mix of sex and soul promises great things for the future of UK R&B.

I bought this when drunk and sitting at my computer listening to the title track (yeah i know its pretty sad that i was drunk on my one sitting at my computer!). anyhoo, more importantly...
I dunno I expected this to be the same kind of passionate and grimy british funk that the title track brings along, but far too much of the album just sounds like cheesy new jack swing. Mark Morrison is obviously a talent, his voice really reminds me of that bloke that sang for Cameo (i'm not a big funk man, dont know the geezers name), and some of his lyrics are tight, but the album was just on some really cheesy new-jack boyz-to men-ish that I'm not really feeling it.... still, if that's your scene, he does it better than most...
ps. the title track really is heavy!
