Highly Underrated Zombie Romp,
By
This review is from: Return of The Living Dead 2 [DVD] [1988] (DVD)
I must admit, I much preferred John Russo's book Return of the Living Dead (the 1985 tie-in, not the original 1979 novel) to Dan O'Bannon's movie. Whilst I admit it was fun, I found some of the acting a little too annoying and the punk soundtrack was inappropriate in places. Now no doubt that comment has alienated a lot of readers, as many consider that one of the best zombie movies of all time (or certainly one of the funniest). But I must go out on a limb here and state that I found Return of the Living Dead 2 far more entertaining! The pace is tighter and the jokes are better executed (no pun intended). My only real flaw with it is, just like with the original, both James Karen and Thom Mathews are criminally underused, both reduced to whining supporting roles. And for those that love subtle in-jokes in their movies, watch out for a zombie dressed in Michael Jackson's Thriller outfit during the climax. Hugely enjoyable!

Return of the Living Dead Part 2 is not as good as the original though it runs it pretty close.
Both of the main characters that were killed in the first movie return to this one. Ok that's weird but totally acceptable at the same time since these two work off of each other so well that they make a very welcome return. ROTLD2 actually gets better as it goes on. Don't expect any frights here and the gore level is very minimal. But the jokes are thick and fast, (the car scene is magic). Again like the original this movie is loaded with likeable characters from all walks of life. It doesn't take itself seriously, yet remains a very enjoyable film. You won't be disappointed by this sequel, but be aware it was the last good one.

not so much a horror comedy, more of a slapstick,

after watching the original return of the living dead, i was very disapointed with this sequel, and for one reason, too much comedy. i know the original was supposed to be a horror comedy, but the comedy was very subtle, and came more from certain characters reactions then anything else. this movie however went too over the top with the comedy to the point where it became more slapstick then anything else. a bunch of zombies pay more attention to an exercise video on the tv then a potential victim, one zombie behind a woman keeps stopping everytime she does instead of attacking her, a zombie falls down a hole, another keeps snatching his hand away so others don,t step on it, i could go on and on, but i think you get the idea. and was it really necessary to have a zombie dressed like michael jackson jumping around during the scene at the end where they electricuted the zombies? farcical to the nth degree
