A Barnsley Feast/ Return to Babylon

Two good books spoilt by lazy writing and duplicity

Living in a village to the south of Barnsley, I was intrigued to come across the two books about the area written by Mr Ibbotson. They weren't expensive, and because I'm a sucker for anything with a local connection (there isn't much) I bought both titles. As I write, I can look down on `Babylon', not its real name, but a real place nonetheless.

A Barnsley Feast is a series of quite dark short stories about the area, many of which I guess have their basis in real life.

Babylon is the story of a 30 year old missing person enquiry resurrected in 1989.

I first read A Barnsley Feast, and so far, so good, subject to my comments below.

I then turned to Babylon, only to find that hanging onto the skeleton of a new story, the writer had incorporated many of the stories from A Barnsley Feast.

Déjà vu or what ? When I first realised what was happening I had to close the second book down, open the first, find the relevant passages, just to make sure I wasn't imagining it.

Had Mr Ibbotson subtly woven a few facts from his short stories into Babylon in order to tie the two books together it would have been a very clever move and added to the appeal of both. Instead, pages have been copied and pasted wholesale from one to the other with only the endings of the short stories changed. Probably someone reading Babylon alone will not notice this, but having read A Barnsley Feast first I see that this is very clumsily done and I feel cheated .
