Product Description

CD Description

Just because Wilco ended up getting all the press and the Jim O'Rourke hipster cred, that doesn't mean Son Volt should remain forever destined to be the "other" Uncle Tupelo spin-off band. In fact, hardcore UT fans should feel a strong attachment to the latter, as they stayed closer to the spirit of Tupelo's post-modern country-rock. RETROSPECTIVE does an excellent job of chronicling the group's first five years. All the key tracks from the first three albums are here, from the surprisingly heavy rock of the breakout hit "Drown" to the acoustic-guitar-and-pedal-steel lilt of "Creosote". Most attractive to Son Volt aficionados, though, will be the wealth of rare and previously unreleased tracks. There's a wide variety of cover tunes, with sources including Big Star (thefunereal "Holocaust"), Leadbelly (an oddly elegiac "Ain't No More Cane"), and Bruce Springsteen (a countrified "Open All Night"). Equally compelling are SV leader Jay Farrar's solo acoustic demos of his own tunes "Tear Stained Eye" and "Loose String". An essential document of the mid-1990s alt-country renaissance, this collection makes a strong case for SonVolt as that movement's vanguard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safe for newbies as well as old timers, 10 Aug 2005
As a long-time fan of Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, and just about any side project that Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy have touched (and there are many!), this was an obvious purchase. To be honest, I bought it for the 5 previously unreleased tracks (as I did the UT retrospecive), even though 3 of these are just live versions of songs which appeared on previous albums. Since I already own all of Son Volt's albums, I figured I'd just take one for the team in order to get a few new songs...

Obviously, I didn't read the track list closely enough, because I was pleasantly surprised to realize that there are many tracks on the compilation which have not appeared on Son Volt albums 'per se', but have appeared on various other compilations with other artists, B sides, etc. (Rex's Blues, Looking at the World Through a Windshield, I've Got to Know, Tulsa County, Ain't No More Cane, Holocaust, and Open All Night). Thus, even if you have all of Son Volt's previous albums, you are still getting 12 new songs... Not bad for a compilation of 20 songs!

Songs all what you have come to expect and love about Son Volt. No reason to not have this in your collection. Simply a must-have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neglected, 20 Jul 2005

I recently picked up their comeback CD Okemah (etc.) and wondered why I'd ignored Jay Farrar's output since Uncle Tupelo. So I ordered this and it confirms that he is a force to be reckoned with.

This is a good collection as it mixes rocky material with country and singer-songwriter material. This is how compilations should be; giving an idea of the range of the artist. The Uncle Tupelo retrospective is similar in this respect.

A very worthwhile purchase for fans of Uncle Tupelo, Wilco (those are the obvious ones) plus Pearl Jam and REM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected, 28 Oct 2009
If you like Uncle tupelo and Wilco then you should like this. the songs are excellently written and performed. there is a yearning in the voice which captured my ear easily and reminded me of the reasons I enjoyed this sort of music from the get go.

It can be seen as something of a alt country family tree sort of thing with arguably the daddy of this genre being the main driver of this. I like that heritage. I like that the sounds are traceable. It implies a singular vision that validates, in part, my emotional investments in the tunes.

Smashing with no surprises or depression.
