In 2005,chimaira released their self titled third album,it was metal indeed but suffered from being contrived, over produced and over long and as a result mixed reviews followed and a split from roadrunner records followed,it was safe to say that the band were again experiencing dark days.
Fast forward to the present day and resurrection ,their new album with record label nuclear blast falls onto earth and on first few listens the signs are certainly alot better, the band themselves are as proud of this as any of their albums,it isnt their best in my opinion but all the elements of furious metal with melody and clean vocals all peppered with a underlying keyboard influence have returned to make a better album with little in terms of filler.
The album opens with the brilliant title track and mark hunters vocals are as fierce as ever, the chorus of this song is stunning and the riffs slay left ,right and centre, signs are indeed good,'pleasure in pain' follows and is a great track as well as is 'worthless' which took a few listens to appreciate if im honest, the song is simple in some way but its heavy and the lyrics here as with the majority of tracks deal with expression of hatred and vengeance and so forth, there are no lyrics about flowers and lambs wagging their tails here.
The track 'six' follows and is an epic at under 10 minutes long, but where the longer tracks didnt quite maintain their brilliance on their previous album, this track actually works, its a journey of a song experimenting with different styles and kepping it interesting.
The album moves along nicely with 'killing the beast' which has some really catchy moments, the track 'flame' is as good as anything chimaira have ever recorded before, stirring stuff indeed.
Four more tracks follow that more or less tick all the required boxes needed to make a great metal album, chimaira realise that they have all the tools to make a great album, here they bring it back.
