One of the seminal albums of the eighties. When the Pet Shop Boys got together with Liza Minnelli in 1989, pop came of age.

The Pet Shop Boys - one of the few standout 'electronic' acts from an era of so much pap, with their own distinctive sound - combine their song writing and production skills with Liza Minnelli's unique vocal talents.

Liza's voice reminds us of a bygone age, when singers could actually sing and knew "timing" meant something other than the length of a song! Moreover, on this one album, she showed us that her range and talents were not limited to songs written purely for the stage or screen.

Ten superb tracks, four of which charted (in the UK) as singles, seven of them written by Lowe and Tennant, plus three great 'covers'. Each song a masterpiece in its own right, from the outrage of Don't Drop Bombs: "I know you carry on/Behind my back/With your secretary/You'll have a heart attack", to the shattered-love song, I Can't Say Goodnight: "I don't know whether/I'll love you much longer/I don't know whether/Whether I can".

Liza's version of the PSB classic "Rent", gives the lyrics a completely new meaning and how many albums do you know that include a rendition of an entire Shakespeare sonnet? This one does!

The covers include a sublime version of Tanita Tikaram's "Twist In My Sobriety" (but even with Liza's interpretation, the meaning behind the lyrics is still beyond comprehension!) and, what Liza album would be complete without a Stephen Sondheim song, in this instance the poignant "Losing my mind" (see the video if you can, it's stunning!).

This album should be any list of the Top 10 albums of the 1980's and is one of the top 50 albums of all time. A true classic.

It is important to note that after their debut and their association with Bobby O (between 1981 and 1984), Pet Shop Boys became the living representation of successful pop music between 1985 and 1989. In this time frame, no-one could approach them in terms of melodic invention, production value, artistic qualities (Neil Tenant's voice) and this ability to blend sophistication with utter simplicity. the success of the PSBs, their almost Mozartian qualities were bound to attract other artists and the crowning of this "Imperial phase" is, in my view, the "Results" LP they produced for Liza Minnelli as well as the "half LP" they produced for Dusty Springfield, both recorded in 1988-1989.
The Liza Minnelli album has no flaw: it is so perfect it is actually scary. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe did write tracks especially for the LP (the beautiful "so sorry, I said", the very efficient dance hits "I want you now" and "If there was love"), and successfully recycled old tunes of theirs (the great "don't drop bombs" or the ballad "I can't say goodnight" that closes the album). More importantly, two of the most successful songs in the album are covers of two great PSB tracks: "Rent" is one of them and Liza gives it the "feminine feel" that a lot of us wanted to hear considering that the song relates the story of a "kept" woman. The orchestral arrangement is very classy and elegant. The other is "Tonight if forever" and Liza's voice on "Tonight, tonight, tonight..." is haunting.
The production on Stephen Sondheim's "Losing my mind", Tanita Tikaram's "Twist in my sobriety" or Yvonne Elliman's "Love Pains" combined with the many nuances of Liza's voice make for extremely exciting moments indeed. This album is a monument.

Most definitely Liza's defining moment in terms of 'pop' and chart success.

This was a collaboration that could not go wrong. Liza makes every song here sound her very own, and there is a 'distinct' sound that makes this album sound really 'special'.

Her biggest hit on the album is of course the fabulous 'Losing My Mind', but for me, the greatest song (and indeed should have scored her a chart-topper) was without a doubt 'So Sorry, I Said'.

Three fabulous songs from this great collection can be seen with accompanying Videos on a DVD with the re-issue of this CD (see my Review for that) entitled: 'Visible results'.

Fabulous!

Got my copy, and i'm amazed this HARDBACK BOOK is stunning, artwork from the 12inch singles in the booklet. The bonus disc has great mixes on, especially the LOVE PAINS Steve Silk Hurely deep house pains mix.
The remastering brings this already classy album to life, that warmth of the vinyl makes such a difference, the two 180g discs, a lovely weight and spot gloss on the cover works a treat.
WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY.

This is a brilliant album which was constructed by the PSB with the superb vocals of Liza Minnelli. This is fun as well as dark one broody. From the upbeat and fun Don't Drop Bombs, the dark and smouldering I can't say goodnight and the haunting version of Rent. A added gem is Liza's take on Love Pains by the fabulous Hazell Dean. A must for any 80's fan or PSB van. A must!!
